Philadelphia Schools are Beginning to Close Due to Cold Weather!

Virginia schools too...

Our schools were closed today and will be tomorrow. I don't mind though, it's nice to have the Orthodox Christmas off for a change!

now here is my take - I work in a school - some may not be able to maintain their heat and their pipes. Don't know if the warm student bodies wouldn't keep the place warmer, but that may be the reason. . . or one of the reasons, anyway.

Windchill at bus stops has been cited as a reason for closings in the past.

Personally, I enjoy the winter and do NOT want to wimpify the kids.
. . . but I cheer with the rest of them when we get a day off!

It's one thing to have off or take off for a holiday. But due to below freezing temps?! What would people do if they lived in Canada?! Its not like they don't have heat in the schools.

North Florida is too. It will not get over 24 in some of our counties. As a parent I am glad that someone had the sense to do this here.

No Problem!!! My sister is a teacher in Phila. She just text me about it. I have to work in it tomorrow. So I'm a little jealous.

We have heat like we have AC - on paper, in theory. It can be so hot in the summer you are dripping sweat onto the desk.
the trash cans in the cafeteria reek after a few hours in that kind of heat.

been better this year with heat - they must have done some work. But it is not unknown to have to bring in space heaters, which are not allowed ( makes sense, they are a hazard).

Poor OP. I can't help it - I love the winter and every winter day off is a blessing.

I went to school in the district. We always had heat. A/C? Not a snowballs chance in hell!

In Canada and other cold areas of the northern US, because of the freezing temps, buses and other same type vehicles will be diesel with block heaters. Regular gas engines don't start in frigid temps.

In lower states the school buses wouldn't have a block heater. I don't know if they are diesel or not.

The schools close for many reasons....to lower the heat and conserve for financial reasons. Schools would be horrible to heat on this type of day with the wind blowing especially.

Also, Yes, as a previous poster said....we don't need hypothermic kids waiting for school buses that may not start.

I also believe that Philly may not have a bussing system and kids would have to walk...maybe somebody from Philly could confirm if I am right.

I'm sorry if you think my child will become a wimp...however, I don't want my 6 year old waiting for a school bus in these conditions, although she would and would do so happily. She loves the freezing temps and doesn't know when to give up and come in. So, closing schools during these extreme cold snaps does not make for a wimpy kid....I'm just outside Philly, by the way.

I feel cold even while wearing heavy duty snow boots, two pairs of socks, flannel lined jeans, a tank top, t shirt, henley shirt, primaloft insulated ll bean flannel lined hoodie, heavy winter coat, two sets of gloves (outer layer is expensive crab gloves), balaclava, sherpa hat, and with the ll bean hood pulled over my head

Can only stay warm for a few minutes, the wind is brutal and it is blowing snow everywhere. I start feeling really cold after only about 10 minutes of busting ass shoveling snow.

Big difference between 20 and -20...

I don't teach. I will be 3 stories up, on someones roof fixing leaks! Should be a blast.

our buses might have trouble - diesel with French fry additive.

I kid you not. Used vegetable frying oil.

Long Island New York. Numerous schools on the Island have at least a 2 hour delay. Guess if it's really bad they will cancel the whole day

I have yet to see a school bus in Philly, Bucks, Montco, or Delco that was not diesel. And I never ever in my life had off from school because it was 15 degrees out. In fact, if it snowed and I was off, my ass was outside shoveling for hours.

Some kids are walkers or have to wait outside for the bus, it's too dangerous with frostbite being a probability.

closed here in Maryland. I agree with it, its going to be freezing at the bus stop plus we had rain and it will be an ice ring.

I consider it a blessing too! We've been baking bread and just enjoying the day.

I lived in Germany and the roofs tended to be made out of red clay. Red tile, that is.
Slate is even nicer.
