How much $$$$ goes straight to salaries at charitable organizations? I will continue dropping off canned goods at the supermarket.

Well, it would be best to research any charity before donating.....

I'm always in. I tithe my pension for the animal defense organizations every month. They really need the help.

Re: New Years Charity Challenge!
OP should start listing charities.

Also make sure it's not charities where there's some criminal fat cat that takes the first million bucks before anything goes to help, it need to be charities that don't take the money for themselves, that work for free.

I thought about that, but I want people to give to what matters most to them.

the north shore animal league as i kid for 4 yrs i collected for them - til the late 90s there was a huge scandal about their finances that not even 5% went to the animals

One of the places I give to, is our local no kill animal shelter. They truly need the help, since they don't euthanize they need all the help they can get.

I would suggest people look into local no kill shelters. You can go down there, and see if the money is being put to good use, if the animals are living in good conditions. Plus they generally need the extra help.

Be careful if you are donating money. There are a lot of scams and some of them are large scale

I pers. think that the Salvation Army is one of the best, I heard on TV that more than 80 % of the donations go to the needy!!!!!

OP you are so very right, these days we all should check how we can help those who have even less than we do. I do practice that already. often I think I could have needed this or that for myself. but to be truthful, it makes me even happy to help others. and one of these days they will find their way back to a better life in our society again, I know this also.

so if I am able to make a positive change in the life of others, I will do my best to do so.

You have a huge heart, Evan, and we love you for it. hugs

Several families in our neighborhood with young kids are struggling. We're going to buy a $50 grocery store gift card each month and give it anonymously to one of these families. Put it in their mailbox with an encouraging note.
