Anonymous Coward User ID: 51345239 United States 12/31/2013 01:00 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Good for you!! What I would love to see is everyone who smokes cutting down the purchase of cigarettes by at least half and then donating at least some of the money saved to the charity of their choice. Good for the smokers and good for the charities! Also, why don't grocery stores have a food donation box or tub for the needy going year round? If everyone in the country would donate just one box or can of food a week, I'm sure that would make a big difference! And, again -- a win-win-win all around! Also, many times I have food near the expiration dates that I will just end up throwing away because there isn't a food bank near where I live. I would much rather give the food that I know I won't use before it expires to a food bank! |

We have a food bank here, they drop off a bag once a week, we fill it and leave it on our porch and they pick it up on saturday and drop us off a new bag. Seems like it would be a pretty simple charity to start..... |

Our family still has ONE job. Two weddings and a baby coming this year. As I build some for them - I will put some back for those that are less fortunate. I really think, no matter what our own personal situation, we can always help those less fortunate than we are. It doesn't necessarily have to be monetarily. You can donate time as well. |

(I edited out the identifying info.) Dear [name]: I checked your website for food banks, and could find none close to where I live and shop [LOCATION given]. I would like to donate food year-round, so do you know of any grocery stores near there that have donation tubs/boxes year-round? Thanks in advance for your reply. P.S. Why don't ALL the major grocery stores and [NAME OF FOOD DISTRIBUTION CENTER] have donation tubs year-round? I would think it would be a win-win for all concerned -- the food banks, the stores, the givers, and the receivers. Although I live in a fairly affluent area, I would think there are many people like me who would give more if it was more convenient to do so. I'll see what kind of reply I receive! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 51345239 United States 12/31/2013 03:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | How much $$$$ goes straight to salaries at charitable organizations? I will continue dropping off canned goods at the supermarket. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 52047938 You're right. Salaries for charity managers and executives are often outrageous. The problem, though, is that food banks can get more food with money. For example, I volunteered for a food bank, and a big box (about an 18" cube) holding about $50.00 worth of food only cost the food bank about $4.00, if I remember correctly -- and the salaries have to come from somewhere, even though they are subsidized from local, state, and federal government. (Or at least that was the case with the one I worked at.) Anyway, before you give to ANY charity, check to see how much goes for "administrative costs." It is a real eye-opener! |

Then, your local Animal Defense League and whatever other private shelters you know of in your own area. That way, you know what's going on. I already know what a fine researcher you are; you'd have no trouble finding the most worthy of shelters in your own area. Your veterinarian might have a list of shelters on hand, since some of the good ones donate time for free spaying and neutering. This by the way, is free - you just go over there and 'click' to help feed animals in shelters. There is also a store if you want to buy things and help more but it's not necessary. I'm generally stone broke the second half of the month - what I put aside for prepping stays untouched - but I do this every day, just to be doing something for them. You're right about your whole post, but I can answer your question about the "whole food pantry thing" based on my experience volunteering at a food bank. Before I do, though, I will say that there were PLENTY of people who just go to food banks for "extra" or for the reasons you listed, and though they aren't needy at all. The food bank I worked asked for nothing but I.D. (because our "clients" could only go there once a month). But, that being said, there are many "decent" U.S. citizens truly do need to go to a food bank is because of one or more of the following reasons: (1) they are unemployed (or under-employed) and haven't yet gotten into "the system", (2) they are just "short" financially for a short time due to an unexpected financial emergency (such as needing to get their car fixed), and (3) they don't have enough to eat or to feed their kids, but they don't WANT to go on welfare of any kind. Happy New Year! |
