Confirmation testing for the plague bacterium, Yersinia pestis, was confirmed by the state’s Scientific Laboratory Division. An investigation into the man’s home and surrounding areas will take place to look whether there is an ongoing risk. The previous three human plague cases in the state all survived their infection. New Mexico is the only state in 2013 to report human plague. That's fine and helpful except no mention of WHICH antibiotic? That's not a catch-all term. There are different kinds of antibiotics for different illnesses. Knowing which antibiotic exactly is required is important for obvious reasons. |

Healthcare ket is expected to record a CAGR of 9.2% from 2010 to 2015. Anesthesia and respiratory devices market is witnessing a steady growth on the global level due to rising incidence of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, obtrusive sleep apnea and asthma. Rising incidence of respiratory diseases such as OSA and COPD are the major factors influencing the market for the respiratory devices. This segment accounts for the largest share of the anesthesia and respiratory devices market. Increasing medical tourism and rising healthcare expenditure in emerging economies for building up the healthcare infrastructure will subsequently drive the demand for anesthesia devices. The U.S. market for anesthesia and respiratory devices market is expected to grow due to an increase in the number of patients suffering from COPD. (OP) User ID: 51355232 United States 12/18/2013 11:50 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | interesting (creepy) similarities betw current events and the 1918 flu epidemic <snipped> - The influenza or flu pandemic of 1918 to 1919, the deadliest in modern history, infected an estimated 500 million people worldwide--about one-third of the planet’s population at the time--and killed an estimated 20 million to 50 million victims. - More than 25 percent of the U.S. population became sick, and some 675,000 Americans died during the pandemic. The 1918 flu was first observed in Europe, the U.S. and parts of Asia before swiftly spreading around the world. Surprisingly, many flu victims were young, otherwise healthy adults. - Victims died within hours or days of their symptoms appearing, their skin turning blue and their lungs filling with fluid that caused them to suffocate. In just one year, 1918, the average life expectancy in America plummeted by a dozen years. - One unusual aspect of the 1918 flu was that it struck down many previously healthy, young people--a group normally resistant to this type of infectious illness--including a number of World War I (1914-18) servicemen. - Complicating matters was the fact that World War I had left parts of America with a shortage of physicians and other health workers. And of the available medical personnel in the U.S., many came down with the flu themselves. - Officials in some communities imposed quarantines, ordered citizens to wear masks and shut down public places, including schools, churches and theaters. People were advised to avoid shaking hands and to stay indoors, libraries put a halt on lending books and regulations were passed banning spitting. (note: shelter-in-place??) - The flu took a heavy human toll, wiping out entire families and leaving countless widows and orphans in its wake. Funeral parlors were overwhelmed and bodies piled up. Some people even had to dig graves for their own family members. The flu was also detrimental to the economy. In the U.S., businesses were forced to shut down because so many employees were sick. Basic services such as mail delivery and garbage collection were hindered due to flu-stricken workers. In some places there weren’t enough farm workers to harvest crops. Even state and local health departments closed for business, hampering efforts to chronicle the spread of the 1918 flu and provide the public with answers about it. [link to www.history.com] ----------- <snipped from different link> - Short-staffed hospitals overwhelmed with patients attempt to quarantine the infected before others contract the illness. But it is so contagious that even nurses fall prey. - Frustrated about the unexplained sickness, authorities shut down schools and force businesses to close, bringing the whole nation to a halt. Transportation systems all but stop, and health officials urge citizens not to leave their homes. - The early 20th-century pandemic started much the same as the current one. Three years before the 1918 virus took its worst toll, it first surfaced in birds, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. - “Recently published sequence and phylogenetic analyses suggest that the genes encoding the HA and neuraminidase (NA) surface proteins of the 1918 virus were derived from an avianlike influenza virus shortly before the start of the pandemic and that the precursor virus had not circulated widely in humans or swine in the few decades before…Regression analyses of human and swine influenza sequences obtained from 1930 to the present place the initial circulation of the 1918 precursor virus in humans at approximately 1915–1918.” - Unlike most viruses, which normally affect the very young, the weak and the elderly, the 1918 influenza targeted healthy adults from the ages of 20 to 40. Victims suffocated as their immune systems backfired—overreacted—filling their lungs with a reddish liquid, which often bubbled out of them as they died. - “These men start with what appears to be an attack of la grippe or influenza, and when brought to the hospital they very rapidly develop the most viscous type of pneumonia that has ever been seen. Two hours after admission they have the mahogany spots over the cheek bones, and a few hours later you can begin to see the cyanosis extending from their ears and spreading all over the face, until it is hard to distinguish the coloured men from the white. It is only a matter of a few hours then until death comes, and it is simply a struggle for air until they suffocate.” - Later he wrote, “It takes special trains to carry away the dead. For several days there were no coffins and the bodies piled up something fierce, we used to go down to the morgue...and look at the boys laid out in long rows. - By the time influenza ran its full course, a fifth of the world population contracted the flu—killing as many as 100 million. - Throughout America, churches shut down, government banned public meetings, schools closed, businesses collapsed from lack of customers, state institutions became overrun with orphaned children, infected postal carriers were unable to deliver mail, and rancid garbage lined city streets. - Decomposing bodies overflowed from morgues and had to be stored in nearby elementary schools. Wherever people ventured, the smell of rotting flesh haunted them. - There are enormous parallels with 1918 and our current pandemic,” he added. “They are spreading at a similar rate, but we don’t know if the virus will mutate…If it does, this is when it could become very dangerous. But we are working on vaccines and we hope that they will be sufficient” [link to realtruth.org] ----- <snipped> - The 2009 flu pandemic or swine flu was an influenza pandemic, and the second of the two pandemics involving H1N1 influenza virus (the first of them being the 1918 flu pandemic), albeit in a new version. First described in April 2009, the virus appeared to be a new strain of H1N1 which resulted when a previous triple reassortment of bird, swine and human flu viruses further combined with a Eurasian pig flu virus, leading to the term "swine flu". - Unlike most strains of influenza, H1N1 does not disproportionately infect adults older than 60 [/b; this was an unusual and characteristic feature of the H1N1 pandemic.Even in the case of previously very healthy persons, a small percentage will develop pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). - This manifests itself as increased breathing difficulty and typically occurs 3–6 days after initial onset of flu symptoms. - The pneumonia caused by flu can be either direct viral pneumonia or a secondary bacterial pneumonia. In fact, a November 2009 New England Journal of Medicine article recommends that flu patients whose chest X-ray indicates pneumonia receive both antivirals and antibiotics. In particular, it is a warning sign if a child (and presumably an adult) seems to be getting better and then relapses with high fever, as this relapse may be bacterial pneumonia. Chikungunya is a viral disease, carried mainly by the Aedes aegypti mosquito and causes a dengue-like sickness. Symptoms include a sudden high fever, severe pain in the wrists, ankles or knuckles, muscle pain, headache, nausea, and rash. Joint pain and stiffness are more common with chikungunya than with dengue. The symptoms appear between four to seven days after the bite of an infected mosquito.
