To Japanese Posters: come on in and share your stories!
I read a while ago from a Japanese AC who mentioned that many on here are browsing, but don't often post because they fear ridicule for their poor spelling/grammar... I tend agree that English is a very tough language.

I'll take the time to wade through any mistakes and hear your story. Anyone from Japan I don't care how bland or banal it may seem... great culture and the language barrier makes it hard for westerners to fully grasp the complexity

tokyo city vs the outer suburbs, and even the mountains it's all so vast for such a tiny island. your culture has changed so much after the atom bomb.. I've noticed a growth in manga/anime production and of course I grew up with 99% Japanese video games. all the best stuff was never translated into English...

and this is just the surface area of "culture" that I can understand with my complete loss of comprehension for the language.

Also thinking of some old-timers on here who lived through the 40s+... compared to some younger Japanese who were maybe born in the 80s or 90s? kinda my age range

I also love that magic mushies were legal from 1990-2002 very very funny!

I've wanted to start this thread for a while... just watched "Lost in Translation" and it's got me in the mood!

Thread: They are going to close my town

There are only 12 households left. This is a rural mountain village. Most of the peole here are very old. In fact, I'm the youngest left here. Its kind of sad but inevitable. They are consolidating these small communities to bigger places. You can stay if you want but there will be no more electricity, water, road care, etc. People get a little money to move, so I accepted.

Slowly the plants will be reclaim the site. It will be covered in green slowly, an abandoned and forgotten town. Most of the buildings are made poorly and will collapse in a few years. It is a sad and beautiful thing to think about.

I think this is great! Making a place for them to be safe to post.

People from Japan: Please do post! I can understand almost any attempt at English. I'm sure lots of others here are used to less-than-perfect English, too.

Japan is awesome. Japanese people are so creative anime/manga/art/games/martial arts etc. I also think they have the best fighters out of Asia. I love their culture as well so respectful no drama queens who cry about all the bad things they experienced. I hope everything will settle out in Japan after all those things that happened.

Re: To Japanese Posters: come on in and share your stories!
here's another convo I had with a brilliant Japanese fellow just a few weeks back

hey this might be a good thread to ask, can anyone explain to me the exact regional territories between Japan/Russia in the Sea of Okhotsk?

I've always been so confused because Japan is like this tiny island, with a lot of other islands and the land mass is just weird. Especially when you look towards the northern region of Japan
 Quoting: SteamrolledGobias

It is a good question. The islands north of Hokkaido are historically Japanese territory but in the last days of WWII Russia seized them. Japanese citizens moved out except for some Ainu who were native to those islands. Technicallly Japan and Russia are still at war -- no treaty was signed after WWII. Japan does not officially recognize Russian control of those islands, although in actual fact they are under Russian control.

I do not think a war over those islands is at all likely. I think that both Japan and Russia are basically settled with things the way they are now (although occasionally far-right Japanese groups make noise about it). The more pressing concern is wit China and the southern islands.

Re: To Japanese Posters: come on in and share your stories!
The people of Japan are in the same boat as the Americans, in that they have been "fukushima'ed" by their own government.

If I had the resources, I would sponsor a family from Japan and bring them to America. They will still die from the effects Fukushima here in America (just like Americans will die from this man-made disaster), but they will not die quite as soon.

is it a bowl of rice or the neat little rice cakes?

see these are the types of borderline-stereotypical questions inquiring minds need to ask.

in all seriousness I'll keep bumping in the hopes our friends from Japan will contribute some personal stories

Thank you for the kind words.

Personally "not at all" is the answer, beyond whatever might be in the food, water, etc. I have had a long and happy life and now I have few attachments. My guess: the truth is worse than TEPCO says but not as bad as CitizenPerth says. The information flow is weak, we know so little. For now at Least the people of Fukushima are the ones who are the most aftected, at least as from my standpoint.

here is one question not related to you personally

do you have any beliefs of the origin of the Japanese/Asian people? were they here before native Americans... how old do you think the island of Japan actually is?(roughly estimating)

I feel that the Japanese are very historic people on this planet.. but I cannot place my finger on why I feel this way.

no need for a super-long answer but just your opinion would be superb(if you have one)

and again thanks for replying! you are the 1st Japanese poster to hit this thread so I'm excited this may snowball over time

one thing I notice is "religion" in Japan is mostly set around Buddhism

whereas other people in Europe,N/S America are such a mixed bag of beliefs. I think the Japanese beliefs following "the purpose of life" may be truer than other cultures
