Illinois police department to tweet DUI suspects
RIVERSIDE, Ill., Dec. 10 (UPI) -- A suburban Chicago police chief said his department will begin tweeting out names of people arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.
Riverside, Ill., Police Chief Tom Weitzel said he hopes the additional exposure will act as a deterrent for would-be drunk drivers to stay off the road.

What do you think? Is a little public embarrasment a good technique to curb DUI?

A lawsuit for defamation from the first one innocent will stop this.

Tiger you make a great point. The article doesn't state whether or not these tweets are before or after conviction.

No it won't. The cops will justify their violation of our rights by saying it was necessary to stop drunk driving.

Reading the article, it appears they will post the info when they arrest people, not after conviction or charges filed. It sounds like they will just round them up, post their names, and charge them later.

BTW, being arrested, and being charged are 2 entirely different legal steps. A lot of people are arrested and then let go, and NOT charged.

I looked at the twitter account and it seems like an online police blotter, but i'm going to investigate this a bit.
