First of all, best of luck. It's a real adventure. I know why you can't get 'over the hump'.

First I'd like for you to consider a change in paradigm regarding your approach to your writing...

If writing is work, you're not a writer.

If you love your world, your characters, and your story, you'll want to visit them.

Often people get mired in the false idea that if you write it perfectly the first time, you won't ever have to work on it again. Nothing is farther from the truth.

In the first draft rip into that story. Don't stop to correct typos. Forget grammar. Capture the emotion of the moment, even if you're the only one who will understand what you mean.

Second drafts, thirds... that's when the literary 'work' comes in.

I'd guess that you are writing 'tight' because you know that your husband is going to want to read the moment you get a chapter out. It's that 'pressure to be perfect' that's taking the fun out of the story-telling for you. Remove that pressure and you'll write like a bandit. Remind yourself that you'll be able to fix it in the edits... because you will have to edit. Plan on it. Heck, lean on the fact and let yourself tell the story!
 Quoting: VeryNigh

I agree with much of what you said! I do force myself to ignore grammar mistakes. I think I have even left in a few sentence fragments too, lo. My husband knows i am not changing any of it until second draft. He just ignores the mistakes when he is reading now and focuses only on the story itself.
I did not mean to make it sound like it is too much work for me. I enjoy it and am compelled to do it.
I think the rest of life just gets in the way sometimes. my kids are only small, so they are big interrupters, lol. And i do still work at other jobs too. yesterday, things just did not work out in my favour!
 Quoting: green_girl

Ah, clearer picture. Agreed it can be tough writing when real life gets in the way. And it's great that the hubs understands that you're 'getting it on paper first'. With that kind of support I look forward to reading your completed work!

I see!! So is this an oral presentation or talk you are presenting? Yes, if it were me i would need it written too, otherwise i tend to ramble. I was once asked to give a five minute talk about the paper section at the michaels store i worked at. I went on for 25 minutes, lol.
i have a cool app on my phone called writer. as i write, it not only gves me a word count, but tells me how long it would take to read - handy if you need to keep to a specific time! hope your presentation goes well - let me know!

Here's me horsing around. Just seeing what I could come up with with a "It was a dark and stormy night" kind of beginning!! Lol.

-------------------- CHAPTER 1 --------------------

It was a dark and stormy night. Susan crossed the forty yards from the depot to her car, as she hurried to get inside the warmth of her car. She slammed the door shut, removed her gloves, and rubbed her hands , feeling the heat slowly spread across her palms. She was afraid of storms, and preferred to avoid travelling outside during one. The power was out in the north of the city, and she could see the light above the town beyond that , giving it an ethereal sort of frame. She switched on her music deck, and it continued to play the same song she was listening to when she had arrived here at the depot. As the tunes began to fill the silence of the car, she began to relax a little more.
She started the engine up, and pointed her car towards exit 91 , and settled down to the drive back home. She always liked the hypnotic effect of the calm drive, toward the end of the day , when all that lay before here was dinner, some wine, and a peaceful nights sleep. But there was something today, at the back of her mind, that told her things were not going to be the same. She wondered for a moment about it, then discarded the thought , putting it down to tiredness.

.

i thought that was pretty damngood. It is not easy to make "dark and stormy night" sound interesting, but i wanted to keep reading more. do you have more? lol. that was fun!! Thanks for sharing too.
 Quoting: green_girl

Thanks. You're kind. :)
I'll keep adding to that. That was impromptu. No planning, no design.
cheers

p.s. This thread can use that as a sort of writers inspiration. More will come as we go along.

*update: my book is going strong - i have posted a screenshot every thousand words (contains bits of spoilers on each shot i suppose) and so far have made it to 11,000! For someone with my attention span that is pretty good. I am aiming for around 100,000 words, a tenth of the way there. Also on the last page i relayed his feedback on what i have so far.*

chuckle

no, my sweet husband isn't an ass or anything. But he knows how much i likes my glp. So, when I complained about not having the time to finally write this book I have been putting off, he kindly (and timidly) suggested that if I didn't spend so much time CT-porning, I would have the time needed to actually write.

So, now i think i shall compromise by turning glp into a "resource", hahaha!

So, anyone else out there struggling to get the words out? Any success in overcoming writer's block? Any hurdles, struggles, successes?

Maybe we creative writers could have a little cheer leading thread to help keep us going. And also, when we do give in to temptation and log in, this thread in our "recent threads" might shame us into making our visits a little shorter so we can get back to our masterpieces!!

And if GLP is "helping" me out, then he can hardly complain, can he?

thanks - glad to hear you have enjoyed my teaser pages!
I am trying to not rush - not so much for the quality of the writing, but to make sure i dont get "burned out", as for me that is the kiss of death when it comes to writing! Many a great character has been killed off because i got burned out and abandoned them.

Even now, i can read what i have and see when I was beginning to force the words or lose interest for the day. It shows in the writing - but I just let the words lie where they are for now. in the second draft, i can fix everything!

Man!! Dodged a bullet last night.
I normally write, leave. come back write a few ore words, leave again. But seldom do I think to click the "save" button. It never occurs to me, only rarely. I dont even reboot my laptop. Yesterday i wrote 2,400 words. And before i went to bed, i remembered to hit save. and thank god! When i got up this morning, my computer woke up out of sleep mode, and then instantly went into shut down mode to install those $$#^R&^%^* windows updates, lol. When it does that, it never warns me, nor does it ask if i have unsaved work to save. It just shuts down rudely.
So, long story short - i saved it and thankfully too, because i dont even remember what i wrote yesterday to retype it if i had to.
Lesson learned. sort of. i am sure to go back to my irresponsible ways again. one of these times I will not be so lucky.

14,000 words. slow going this evening. I am into a part of the story that puts me out of my element - dialogue, lol. I am thinking of just flubbing it greatly for now, and then on revision getting my hubby to help talk me through it to find natural expressions and such.
Going to try to get to 15 or 16,000 words tonight. I wish i hadnt wasted the day away but the kids were home, so we all needed some good snuggle time. Plus, i managed to get them hooked on harry potter, heehee. we had many movies to watch this weekend, though only made it to the end of number 4.

about 85,000 words left to the first part of this story.
i started writing this on december 7th. So in just over a week i have come a long ways. i just emailed what i have so far to my mother in law (who is a big time fantasy nut) but her taste and mine are very different. I am going to be just a wreck tomorrow, knowing she is reading it. judging me too, lol.
I am dying to know what she thinks, adn like my husband, any feedback i get from her will be brutally honest as well.
I promise to share what she says, even if it is humiliating, lol.

I am anxious to get back tot he writing. I left poor Doran in an awkward spot - what with almost having been seduced by the queen. He dodged a big one there. I dont think he would have enjoyed getting his head chopped off over it, heehee, almost time for him to get on his horse and gallop the hell out of there...if the queen will let him! 71,000 words here. Thought I had more.

But it's coming along.

We must write even we are producing crap, because the only way to improve is to keep writing.

It's time to wrap up my story... need a good climax and don't want to disappoint any future readers (if there are any).

Good luck GG.

Oh, and fuck those assholes that are trying to ruin this thread. They're just pissed because they can't do what you are doing. Otherwise, why would they waste their time here? None are writers that I can see. :)

KEEP GOING!

well, feeling shameful!! chuckle
instead of writing a thousand words last night, i spent my time arguing on yet another ison thread.
I came out victorious, but it was a hollow victory when the people you debate with refuse to acknowledge defeat, lol.
So here are yesterday's words:

i guess i will have to write today's words later if i can find the time. My girls have their school concert tonight - proud mommy. It is my youngest girl's first performance and i can't wait!!!

Wow that was some fake ass shit. I'm not sure wether to laugh or cry. Yeah, you are a writer alright..

I can't believe you wasted all those 16 hours arguing a mute point when you could have been working on that gem of a tale you could be weaving.

Spell binding, indeed.lol

I admire the ability to write. I have no imagination
and no writing skills, so I stay with the opposite - research.
