Re: Brrrrrrrrrr........ it's dang cold. Temp check and location for EVERYBODY check in and do tell us
This might be a stupid question, but, how come the summers are hotter and the winters are colder? Every year earlier too?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 50355478

I don't know for sure, but everything, weather included, is one huge cycle. These temps are not unheard of, it has just been mild for the last 30-40 years so many people haven't seen this ever or in a long time.

People around here still talk about how nasty the winter of 78-79 was. Most of the records we're breaking are from the 30's and 70's, so based off that I'd say we get these extremes about every 40 years.

We lost cows in that one. It was a doozy, a great deal of snow. Although winter before last was a big snow maker out here!
 Quoting: bigD111

That winter happened 4 years before I was walking this Earth. Heard stories from my father though. He was still living on with his parents on the ranch out by Manchester. Guess they were snowed in pretty bad. My grandpa called all the snowmobile dealerships in town and said the first person to get one out to him had a sale. They became proud owners of a new arctic cat shortly after that. That was the winter that pushed them to move into town. Apparently the night that hit they got stuck on the road and had to walk 3 miles in a whiteout to get to the house. Damn near got lost from what I understand. Thankfully they didn't otherwise I wouldn't be here.

No kidding! Got down to -35F last night. Back up to -25F currently. If the forecast holds it should start warming up and we may actually make it above 0 for the first time in a week or so!

Power outage happening in Great Falls too. Started @ 3:30 AM. A shelter has been set up.

Good grief ! Hope everyone stays safe up there.

How many places are having record lows?

I ask because several years ago I could litteraly smell a mini ice age coming.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 50355478

Records have been falling all around the state and I am sure the region. We're beating records from the 30's and 70's mainly.
 Quoting: Sol Neman

Thats what I thought too. And earlier winters.

At what temp before the engine block will crack?

Do you all have to have heaters under your vehicles?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 50355478

All of Alberta and Saskatchewan are under a wind chill and or blizzard advisory. We own a ford truck and it surprisingly started right up this morning. Not plugged in at all. We've had record snow too. Were used of the cold here bit even our huskies don't want out for more than 5 minutes.oh and to boot this morning woke up with 2% propane. Still waiting for a fill. This is our first winter with propane heating and we didn't realize it was out =/ thank god for prepping for the unexpected! Stay warm peeps! hf

Yes he was. I wish I would have been able to get to know him better. I was still pretty young when he passed.

That night of the blizzard I guess it was him, my grandmother and one of my aunts. They got stuck and knew they needed to get back to the house before it got worse so they started to head towards the house on foot across some fields. Were it not for my grandma arguing with that stubborn old Norwegian they would have gone in the wrong direction. Grandpa was a tough man, but my grandma was more convincing that night and they made it back the house ok. My father was already at the house taking care of the animals and didn't have any way to go out and look for them. Hence the reason they bought a snow machine the next day.

My Dad told me my grandpa had to take his wife to the hospital in this kind of weather, at night. In the late 20's. It was a model T. Had to keep water for the radiator indoors, so it would not freeze. Pour in the water, crank the handle and go. Course when he got there he had to drain the water and take it indoors! Now that would be a drag!

Wow! Yea, it would be.

I think that was a minor inconvenience though. Those Model T's didn't have a pressurized oil system, the tool kit that the car came with included babbitt material and the tools to shape and smooth it. About every 30 miles you had to pull over and pour oil on the cam and other valve train parts, hence the reason all the hoods opened from the sides and they had running boards to stand on. Then about every 100 miles you had to drop the oil pan and reapply babbitt to the crank and rod mains.

I gotta hand it to the old timers that lived through those times up here. They were some tough hombres.

My great grandfather was the manager of the Conrad Circle cattle company, from 1870 to 1910. They ran 35,000 cows from Fort Benton to Calgary. They wintered them west of Calgary in the Bow River valley. I often think of how ungodly tough these men were! All done on horseback too! Wow!

Long story short it took them 3 months to get the cattle moved a distance of what now takes a few hours. He had some other stories about calving during bitter cold like this and what they had to do back in those days just to survive. We made it up to -16 F today, dropped back down to -19 F now. Tomorrow it's supposed to start warming up. Our high is supposed to be 9! Don't sound like much but just being above zero will make me feel better.

Unfortunately, as early as it is into this winter season I have a feeling this may only be a taste of what's to come. January and February are typically colder than December for us. If we're getting down to -35 F now I am really not looking forward to what happens in the next couple months.

Yea, back in those days men were men for sure. An old family friend was one of the last original cowboys and he was telling a story about a cattle drive from Billings to Miles City back in the early 30's on horses. Long story short it took them 3 months to get the cattle moved a distance of what now takes a few hours. He had some other stories about calving during bitter cold like this and what they had to do back in those days just to survive. Gives you a different perspective on how to "prep" for survival these days. Lots of tips and tricks too.

It's all relative. I am used to this type of cold for the most part. It's not fun but we can deal with it up here. On the other end of the spectrum I feel like I am melting when the temps get above 90 with no humidity. I doubt you're even breaking a sweat when it gets to 90 down there.

Not as cold as most of you, but it's 20°F in Tacoma, WA at 8:20pm. I wrapped up the pipes last night. Haven't done that in a couple years. In the Seattle area, we're not prepared for this. The last 3 winters have been very mild. I don't think it even snows last winter. There are even opening some of the middle schools gyms for "warming centers". I believe there is an hour limit. But you can just leave and come back. I was also told they check ID.

-26 F with wind chill of -44 F in Great Falls right now. That's 10 degrees colder than forecast for tonight. It's supposed to start warming up around midnight tonight but that remains to be seen.
