Heater runs constantly, keep doors and windows sealed, cover with plastic if necessary.

If you must go out you bundle up. Heavy coat, wool sweater, gloves, scarf, beanie, heavy boots and socks. Long johns under your pants, and that's if you're just running the trash to the alley. If you're heading out to woods or work outside the coat gets heavier and bibs go over the jeans and long johns.

Maybe Obama could come and speak and the hot air will warm us up!

Lol... kind of used to it. We're just damn lucky the wind is somewhat calm. The lowest wind chill I've witnessed was -90. Being from the south originally I thought it was hell on earth lmao...

Good to hear. I'm glad my grandma doesn't live out there anymore. She's on the east end now. That's the only person I know that lives in that area. I just hope the power stays on at my place as I am not to far from the affected area.

Yea, you get used to it. That's the coldest wind chill I've seen as well, in Havre when I was younger. The wind has been friendly as of late, not nearly as windy as what we're used to.

No, but you can have fun things like frozen water pipes, this is common. We us heaters, heat tape, and insulation a lot, but then the heat tape quits working or something and you freeze up. Never a good time.

Funny you mention that, my back door has a ton of frost on it and some of the windows do as well. This house was built in 1900 so insulation isn't the best but we're still warm. I have a bay window on the south side I am sitting in front of and the sun feels nice and warm on the inside though. I'll snap some pictures and post them here.

In the old days, our propane furnaces worked independent of electric, so you could lose power and still stay warm. Nowadays the furnaces use electronics, so when you lose power you are screwed.
Now I ask you, is this progress?

Nah... haven't really heard of experienced it. They're built pretty hefty out here.

This might be a stupid question, but, how come the summers are hotter and the winters are colder? Every year earlier too?

It would seem that at -90 the windows would crack if the heat is on indoors?

That was the coldest wind chill temp. Actual temp was about -50, even so I get what your saying. Glass is quite resilient. I have had the windshield in my vehicle crack when turning on defrost but that was because there was a rock chip I didn't get filled which caused a weak point.

I don't know for sure, but everything, weather included, is one huge cycle. These temps are not unheard of, it has just been mild for the last 30-40 years so many people haven't seen this ever or in a long time.

People around here still talk about how nasty the winter of 78-79 was. Most of the records we're breaking are from the 30's and 70's, so based off that I'd say we get these extremes about every 40 years.

We lost cows in that one. It was a doozy, a great deal of snow. Although winter before last was a big snow maker out here!
