Message Subject What Is The Reddish Star I Saw at/after Sunset in South East? It's NOT Venus

I am really surprised at seeing this although I think it's in a different part of the sky than the other objects that have been discussed. They were seeing something in the western sky, this was in the south eastern sky - east of Venus anyway. It might be just a known star but I'd never noticed it before and the fact that it was so bright and reddish is what caught my eye. Very strange. I'll be looking for it again Friday. the weather here has sucked between regular clouds and chemtrailing, hopefully I get another good look.

You folks are right though, it appears around sunset and lasts for maybe a couple of hours afterwards. Does not rise high over the horizon, I don't think it rises as high as Venus currently is.

Hello Mehitable Lives, sorry to hear you think you may be mocked, too many people on here type without thinking first.

I believe what you are looking at is Aldebaran. You didn't say where in the East you are but guessing at the north East USA, Aldebaran is about the same altitude above the horizon, more or less due East at the same time as Venus is in the SW (17:30 EST).

Aldebaran is very noticeably orange or red. There are only a handful of bright red stars and Aldebaran rally grabs your attention. It's something I look out for every winter. Aldebaran ( alpha Tauri ) is the red eye of Taurus the bull. If you look towards it with a pair of binoculars you can see the beautiful open star cluster of the Hyades. The more famous Pleiades cluster is directly above it.

You say you loose track of it after a couple of hours. Orion with the prominent red star Betelgeuse will have taken its position by then with Jupiter low on the horizon a little further north. By that time Aldebaran should be around 40 degrees altitude. Hope this is helpful
