What Is The Reddish Star I Saw at/after Sunset in South East? It's NOT Venus
Okay, mock me, but I'm wondering what star this is as I can't pick it out on Google Sky and it really struck me tonight as I was leaving my office. Venus was in the south west, clearly, and to the east of it maybe 90-120 degrees or so away, was a reddish star fairly low on the horizon, but about at the same altitude, or a bit lower, as Venus. It was NOT Venus as I could clearly see Venus. This would be after sunset around 5:30 pm EST when I left, and I could catch glimpses of it occasionally over the next 45 minutes or so on the ride home (into the west).

It wasn't Jupiter - well, it didn't look like Jupiter anyway - and Jupiter was below the horizon at that point, and it wasn't Mars or Betelgeuse (both of them kind of reddish of course) as the position was wrong and I believe both were below the horizon then. I can't see anything on Google Sky that seems to correspond with it.

Sorry I can't be more explicit but we were in a rush to get home and I couldn't make better coordinates. I don't think I'd be able to see it tomorrow as I'm in a different location and this didn't rise far above the horizon. Maybe Friday, I'll try to be more precise about location and altitude if I see it again.

I'm not saying it's anything doomy or Hercolubus or Nbiru or anything like that, but I'm wondering what it might have been. Definitely a star or planet (i.e., not a comet). It took me by surprise as I believe that's the location where people have been seeing something strange in the sky?

Anyway, let me know what you think it is, folks.

If it helps, this object was so bright at first I thought it was Venus (but in the wrong place!), and I wondered why Venus would have a "reddish" look, but then I saw Venus to the west of it at about the same altitude or a bit higher.

I having been noticing that there seems to be a pattern to all these "contrails" and it seems like they are spraying on some sort of schedule around every two weeks or so here now and I am beginning to think they may be trying to hide something

Yeah, I've been seeing it as well all Fall.
I think there are many threads on it, but there is a lot of noise from opinions in them.

No, this object I saw was just slightly east of south and very high up in the sky. I have went out on several occasions to look for this south/southwest object in the other threads to no avail.

This was around 70 degrees in the sky and the sun had not fully set yet and I watch Venus over a tree in the backyard when the sky is clear and this was well south of that.

Stellarium shows I was looking at Fomalhaut possibly, however it looks lower on stellarium that what i saw with my own eyes.

Should you be able to see fomalhaut before the sun sets right now?

Yes, Venus was north west of this. How high up would you say Venus was in comparison? I was quite surprised by this as I couldn't locate what it was on Google Sky, which is usually pretty reliable, lol. I noticed it AFTER sunset and it stayed up in the sky for a while after that. It's not far above the horizon so I couldn't follow it's progress all the way home - too many trees and buildings.

I'm glad other people are seeing this and I just wonder what it is....

That's interesting. What I saw appeared to be at the same or lower altitude as Venus, which I think is lower than Fomalhaut, although that is an excellent speculation. Is Fomalhaut of a reddish appearance? This seemed reddish to me and bright enough for me to wonder if it was Venus before I located Venus to the west.

I've seen it. There are threads almost every night about it.

Search Youtube for "strange star in the sky 2013". A lotta people have noticed it.

After looking at quite a few vids and pics, the closest thing I can find to what I saw is Capella:

I seen this in uk around 4:30pm yesterday. It wasn't Venus. I've seen that enough to see what it was.

Thought it could be plane lights but planes were flying in the sky and I could see them normal. This thing was really bright and bigger than the rest of the stats. Going to have a look again tonight see if I can get a pic.

I don't think it's venus either, in just less than two hours +-, it is out of sight...

so funny this thread is up, my girlfriend has been worried about it for 2 years now and asked me yesterday as to if I ever found out what it was. Noting how we have never seen it flicker so loudly and brightly in the sky in our life time. I had given up and just assumed it was the harbinger of death or something ominous.

Re: What Is The Reddish Star I Saw at/after Sunset in South East? It's NOT Venus
I am really surprised at seeing this although I think it's in a different part of the sky than the other objects that have been discussed. They were seeing something in the western sky, this was in the south eastern sky - east of Venus anyway. It might be just a known star but I'd never noticed it before and the fact that it was so bright and reddish is what caught my eye. Very strange. I'll be looking for it again Friday. the weather here has sucked between regular clouds and chemtrailing, hopefully I get another good look.

You folks are right though, it appears around sunset and lasts for maybe a couple of hours afterwards. Does not rise high over the horizon, I don't think it rises as high as Venus currently is.

Hello Mehitable Lives, sorry to hear you think you may be mocked, too many people on here type without thinking first.

I believe what you are looking at is Aldebaran. You didn't say where in the East you are but guessing at the north East USA, Aldebaran is about the same altitude above the horizon, more or less due East at the same time as Venus is in the SW (17:30 EST).

Aldebaran is very noticeably orange or red. There are only a handful of bright red stars and Aldebaran rally grabs your attention. It's something I look out for every winter. Aldebaran ( alpha Tauri ) is the red eye of Taurus the bull. If you look towards it with a pair of binoculars you can see the beautiful open star cluster of the Hyades. The more famous Pleiades cluster is directly above it.

You say you loose track of it after a couple of hours. Orion with the prominent red star Betelgeuse will have taken its position by then with Jupiter low on the horizon a little further north. By that time Aldebaran should be around 40 degrees altitude. Hope this is helpful

I've been and checked again at what I seen yesterday.

It's Venus what I've seen. Checked with a few apps to see. Can't see no red star. Venus is usually east to me. It's SSE now. Probably a different time of year when I last seen it.

It is bright tho.

Thank you for your kind remarks. So many people just get nasty because they think that you think it's Nbiru or soome other unknown body. I assume it's something known that I just am unfamiliar with. I had wondered if it might be Aldebaran because of the reddish hue, but I was surprised at how bright it was and that I couldn't see any other stars around it. I'll have to get out my binoculars tomorrow to take a better look - hopefully the weather will cooperate. Thank you for your info, you've been most helpful :) You're probably right.

I don't think it was Fomalhaut because it had a reddish tinge. From what I've read, Fomalhaut is a white star?

I think this episode again points out how little modern man really knows about the stars - that they change from season to season in terms of if we can see them and how high they rise (above the horizon). Some stars are most visible in certain months. So when we see something that we haven't seen before in a certain location, many people assume it's something "new", when it's just something we're unfamiliar with as you have to watch the skies regularly - for years actually - to have a complete understanding of what's normally out there.

You know what guys, I think artists renditions would be better! If it was clear, I could do mine from real-time, but will have to go off memory.

Till then....
Venus was white and solid. The object I was mesmerized by was:

Red/orange, same/slightly smaller size, sparkly, and to Venus' 4 o' clock.

This was in Texas, in the July-September sky, looking down to the southern sky, at dusk, just above the treeline.
