Lost my 8 yo Terrier last night to cancer. Pet Lovers: share your stories!
My beloved dog was hit extremely suddenly by cancer. Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, she seemed healthy, happy, and perfectly normal. Her first seizure of her life happened Thanksgiving night and the second one on Friday morning. The vet took blood and ran several tests, suspecting Addison's disease or insulinoma (cancer of the pancreas).

We were told to give her many small meals to keep her blood sugar up, and Monday she was scheduled for an ultrasound to see if there were tumors. She had several small ones on the outer areas of her pancreas that were likely operable, but she had a massive inoperable one in the middle of her pancreas.

Yesterday, Tuesday, we received the results of her Insulin RIA test confirming the insulinoma. Last night she went into heavy seizures, one after another for 45+ minutes and we were forced to put her to sleep.

Between her first seizure and her last breath, we had 5 days. We thought we'd have more time, but God called her back to him for some higher purpose.

She will be greatly missed and I hope God is enjoying her wonderful bright soul - it shone so bright she lit up every room she was in.

I'll miss you, baby.

I'm terribly sorry for your loss. I lost my Mastiff a couple years ago during surgery to remove a giant tumor on his spleen. It broke my heart

Yeah, I can tell she's going to leave a large hole in my heart and in our lives. Our house is too quiet now and I miss that she used to sneak on the bed in the middle of the night.

Thanks for the pic.

Wow. Nearly 20! That's amazing. What I would have given to get another 12 years from my girl.

I talk to my girl as well. I hope some day to feel her presence or see her near me. I don't want her trapped in some middle existence, but a goodbye would make my world.

I'm sorry for your loss as well.

I am terribly sorry for your loss.I once had a parakeet called Floyd whom I loved. One day I came home and found him struggling on his back at the floor of his cage in death throes but as he passed he locked eyes with me as if to say "help". I could do nothing. That is why I will not keep pets any longer. It hurts too much when they die. I suspect that the Teflon baking pans caused his death. I was a teenager and my Mom bought these dumb pans to bake with. I very much suspect they caused his demise. Again, I sympathize with you. We can only trust that they go to a better place. Love unto you.Thanks.

I'm ready to. Hubby specifically said last night, "I'm not ready for another dog yet."

But I think he'll realize my emptiness. Ginger really was my dog, she followed me, she went everywhere with me. She was my world.

I'm hoping he'll be ready sooner rather than later.

I'm sorry to hear that story. That same powerlessness is what I felt when my girl was seizing continuously, one after another after another. There was nothing I could do. She looked so scared. We had to carry her seizing body to the car. It was awful.

Did you used to feed him from the Teflon? I don't get the connection. Did you prepare his food using it? I'm curious because I have no idea what caused my dog's cancer. Terrier mixes aren't really predisposed to insulinoma.

Very true. I told my boss that my dog had late stage cancer and that I'd have to leave work early to spend time with her before putting her to sleep and he said, "well, just make sure you're at work tomorrow."

No, it is not like losing a child. This statement irritates me having lost a child.

It hurts, no doubt about that, it hurts bad, I'm still missing my cat Tig-Monster 3 years later, but it is not even close to the same thing as the loss of a child.

OP, so sorry for your loss, I know how badly it hurts hearts

Lost my Bichon Frise about 6-7 years ago. Still miss the little guy. He was 14. I have his ashes on the fireplace mantle.

To fill the void we started doing Bichon Rescue. We had about 20 dogs at least over the years. Some for just a week, others for several months.

When Our Bichon died, he died in my arms at the vet. We did not have to put him down though. We were about to, and he breathed his last before.

We drove home. It was about 10:00AM. When we got home, there was a huge hawk sitting on a fencepost in our backyard. He just sat there for a long time, then flew off. I've never seen one that close in our yard before that, or since.

No I didn't feed him from the pans, but there is a phenomena called Teflon Flu, whereby the initial heating of Teflon will trigger Nausea and radiation exposure type symptoms in humans and animals, and even after the "break in stage" if you let the Teflon coated materials get too hot, they will release hundreds of different carcinogens. Thank You for your sympathy.

Exactly why I stopped cooking with all non-stick stuff years ago.

I want a dog again, but I will have to commit to feeding him grassfed raw meat, like dogs are supposed to eat.

Interesting anecdote about the hawk.

I'm hoping for some sort of sign that she's ok. I told her to go find my Grandmother who loved animals (and her). I hope they found one another.

Re: Lost my 8 yo Terrier last night to cancer. Pet Lovers: share your stories!
We were the proud owners of a tiny male cat (Kramer), a female black lab (Buddy) and a female cinammon lab (Cheney).

Three years ago, Cheney (the youngest) was diagnosed with bone cancer, in her front left leg. We removed the leg and she was a new dog...despite being a tri-paw!!!

Kramer, the oldest was about 15 years, and he quickly began to decline in health around the time Cheney lost her leg. He died 6 months later.

Buddy, the older of the two labs was starting to have hip issues, but in typical lab fashion was always happy and tried to keep up with the family. When Kramer died, Buddy began acting despondent, but Cheney was always playful and the two of them kept each other distracted.

About three months after Kramer died, Cheney's cancer came back, and it was fast. She died about a month after relapse. Two weeks after that, Buddy passed away, as her kidneys failed.

It was, and still is hard for me to think about, and sometimes, when the rest of the family is asleep, and I am working in the basement or kitchen, I expect to see the three of them sitting there watching me, and keeping me company.

I miss them
