Serious health warning for those heading outdoors this weekend.
There's a serious health warning for those heading outdoors this weekend.

San Luis Obispo County Public Health confirmed that a dead squirrel

tested positive for plague.

It's likely others are infected with the potentially deadly disease.

A plea today to people heading to parks, beaches, or anywhere wild rodents roam: don't feed the animals.

"Just about everybody who comes here, they feed them peanuts, cat food," says Morro Bay resident Edwin Gill. He's seen people feeding squirrels here all the time, but San Luis Obispo County health officers hope that will change now that it could be life threatening. "That dead rodent could've passed it on via the flea to another rodent," says Dr. Frank Mazzoni, a family practitioner. The plague is an infectious bacterial disease spread by rodents and their fleas. Humans can contract the disease if exposed to infected fleas or if they handle infected animals, which includes feeding them. Other residents know all too well how dangerously close these rodents get. "I know the bravery of these things; it would be nothing for someone to get bit," says resident Joel Hughes. "They walk right up to you, no fear of man whatsoever." Health officers are not releasing the name of the Morro Bay park where the infected squirrel was found, but they're warning everyone to avoid contact with wild rodents and walking near their burrows. They also advice leaving your pets at home during outings and warn cats are highly susceptible to plague and can spread the disease to humans. Dr. Mazzoni adds the discovery is reason for concern, but not panic. "It can be a relatively serious infection, but the risk of developing it is relatively low." Symptoms of plague include high fever, chills, headaches, and swollen glands. Individuals who develop these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention. If caught early, plague is treatable with antibiotics; if untreated, it can be deadly. In the last 36 years, 39 human cases of the plague have been confirmed in California.

And the fish in Lake Erie have hemorrhagic fever..

Lake Erie perch perish off Cleveland, Lorain
May 23, 2006

Lake Erie fish are unexpectedly dying, with anglers reporting thousands of yellow perch floating off Cleveland and Lorain in recent days.

It follows a massive die-off of tens of thousands of sheepshead, or freshwater drum, along the Ohio shoreline in late April and early May.

That fish kill was due to a viral infection, hemorrhagic septicemia or VHS, diagnosed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service laboratory in La Crosse, Wis.

"At first we thought the perch kill may have been a bycatch issue from commercial trap nets, but it was too widespread," said Kevin Kayle, an ODNR Division of Wildlife fisheries biologist at the Fairport Harbor station. "The perch kill stretches from Lorain to Conneaut.

"It's important to know if this could be VHS spreading from freshwater drum, or perhaps a bacterial infection in perch like Ontario experienced last spring in the Western Basin [of Lake Erie]."

The majority of the dead perch are in the 6- to 8-inch range, members of a plentiful year class that hatched in 2003. Only a few thousand perch from a population in the millions has been affected so far, said Kayle.

Fisheries biologists were on Lake Erie on Monday looking for perch. Only fish that are sick or have just died can be accurately sampled for a bacteria, virus or fungus.

Fish kills have become common this year. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is still investigating a winter kill that claimed about 4,000 muskies in Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River.

No EQ strong enough to generate a tsunami.

And why is the 6.7 in Tonga no longer on
the EQ list?

Epidemic Hazard

New Mexico reported its first death from the plague in 12 years Friday.

The state Department of Health confirmed a Bernalillo County woman died from septicemic plague early last week. The agency does not release details on plague victims.
Plague, a bacterial disease, is generally transmitted to humans by the bites of infected fleas but also can be transmitted by direct contact with infected animals - rodents, wildlife and pets.
The septicemic form occurs when the bacteria multiply in the blood. It does not spread from person to person, said the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
New Mexico reported four human plague cases last year.
There were no human cases in the state in 2004.
Plague activity increased last year in Bernalillo County and other areas of north-central New Mexico,

a trend that appears to be continuing this year,

said Dr. Paul Ettestad, public health veterinarian for the Department of Health.

Jesus Christ it's snowing in South Africa!

Johannesburg As South Africa’s coldest winter in years descends on the country, people have started losing their lives in the struggle to keep warm. A national warning released by the South African Weather Services on Monday morning has stated that “very cold conditions are expected over the high ground of the Northern, Western and Eastern Cape provinces, the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and the highveld of Gauteng and Mpumalanga”. The warning follows a weekend of freezing conditions. At least five people have reportedly died in the Eastern Cape because of exposure to the cold. The weather service reported the falling of snow in certain parts of the country. The season fell on the Matroosberg in the Ceres district and the Little Swartberg in the Ladismith area. Snow was also reported in the Winterberg at Aberdeen, Cradock and Queenstown, as well as in the Drakensberg at Elliot, Barkly-East and Cala. Widespread rain and bitter cold prevailed in most of the Northern, Eastern, Southern and Western Cape on Sunday. There were also showers in Gauteng and other parts of the country. According to the weather service's seven-day forecast, minimum temperatures in Johannesburg and over the Vaal Rand area are expected to plummet to minus figures during the week. When AND spoke to the MEC for social development in the Eastern Cape, Thoko Xasa, to determine what her department planned to do to avoid similar tragedies in the province – in light of the warnings of continued extreme weather – she seemed unaware of the weekend’s deaths and declined to comment on the matter. The Weather service has said that the icy conditions will continue until at least Thursday.

Don't forget Hanta virus, the North American hemmoraghic fever. It's spread by deer mice (and other rodents as well) and the virus is left in their droppings.

If you have a cottage or den or cave in the woods, don't sweep the droppings and create a cloud of dust. Wet it down with bleach and water, then remove.

For those who laugh about plague-keep laughing and soon enough blood will spurt when you do-truly ignorant, and juvenile is key.

School is out now, it is time to learn truth not just programming. Listen and learn young ones-so you have a greater chance to survive. Ignore the signs surrounding you at your own peril.

The old ones may pass soon and what will you have as a teacher???

Amazing the thumb strength these young ones have. rofl

Re: Serious health warning for those heading outdoors this weekend.
The syptoms they are discribing are also the symptoms for the flu or other illnesses. Very vague. I feed the squirrels every day along with wild birds. No problems. However there have been numberous reports in the midwest of these syptoms especially high fever and the trots and they are not linking it to a plague. I do believe however there is something airborne that is causing current illnesses. I also find it interesting that the midwest region has also been dealing with a mumps outbreak. Ironically enough the ones getting it have been vaccinated with the MMR but I have not heard one report of a none vaccinated person coming down with the mumps.
