I like Christmas one family loves to ruin it. She is not happy until she has made a shamble of every family get together. Anyone else have this person in their family? We all wish she would not come to anything, just stay home in her own misery.

Sine I was a child the way man expressed Christmas troubled me , it was not till I lived in Austin and could go hand out things to the homeless did I get it.

I have always got a extra dose of the Spirit during this time , but hated the way my family celebrated with chaos and gifts no one wanted.

Now I enjoy in another way giving gifts to the poor , participating in Christmas parade Jesus Style and trying to spread extra love , thanks for post grouphug

I enjoy spending Thanksgiving and Christmas with my family. I love being around those I care about most and eating good food and giving gifts, even if they are small and nobody appreciates them. I love the smells.
This year I started making some gifts. I'm going to DIY Christmas cards, so they are a little more special (even if no one appreciates that either).

However, work and other people tend to ruin Christmas and the holidays for me. It's a shame.

Wonderful OP ... I gave it up because I chose not to lie to my children ... it was difficult - until my parent's died, but OMG it is so great now and most of the family have given it up now too - we do take the time off to have dinner together but that is it - all the stress is gone

and we don't contribute to the perpetuation of the insanity any more - probably the most POSITIVE gift one could ever contribute to one's family is the example of being TRUE to one's self and them.

FREE at last ... the truth will set you FREE

I voted "I am totally into the whole Christmas thing and love splurging and gorging. OP needs to die." I am fully and ridiculously described in the first part of the statement but I surely do not with death to the OP.

Much love to you Good Mocking Bird. I hope you and yours are staying warm and ready to enjoy the early snow. I went to Crest last night and the crazy people were clearing out the shelves. You'd think it was the snowmegedon.

Strangely beautiful blustery morning today.

I've been out for a 5k run and thoroughly enjoyed the solitude.

We may get a dusting later, but it is far from snowmageddon. I think people are just neurologically short circuitted these days to get into a frenzy just for the sake of getting into a frenzy!

This is how I feel. I almost died 4 years ago, so to me spending as much time with my family and making them happy is the best thing in the world.

I consider Christmas…RETAILER'S WHORE DAY. The commotion & craziness starting with black friday is a purposely created frenzy. I usually buy a few gifts for my adult children. And I do that earlier in the year and these gifts are in my closet waiting to be wrapped. That is it.

Christmas is not just a pagan holiday, it's a celebration of the birth of the antichrist.

You are far more ambitious than I this morning! All I manage was a cup of coffee on the back porch wrapped in a fluffy blanket. I love watching the squirrels scampering around in the morning getting ready for winter.

Let me say that I love my state and my fellow Okies but I agree that there is some short circuiting going on. I've lived in a number of places here and abroad before coming back home yet this is the only place that I've seen this frenzy take hold. It's as if some odd computation takes place in the brain. Water + Cold = catastrophe!

As for Christmas participation, I would be sad to not have it. I spend all year making gifts for my family and friends. It gives me so much joy to see them open the packages and enjoy their gifts. I would prefer to receive a one of a kind hand made item over something store bought any day. The only gifts I really purchase are for my son. It's hard to knit converse sneakers.
Proud to share the basket with you.

Xmas is a pagan holiday that has nothing to do with Christ and frankly the day and events leading up to it (massive consumerism, tree worship, gaudy lights and decorations) would be totally offensive to Jesus. Xmas is a mockery of Jesus and his values. So no i dont participate and frankly dont care what friends and family think about it. I don't do Halloween, Easter or Valentines day either.

You bring up a really good point OP--and it always
needs to be pointed out for the people who have
big families where it would be a big drain financially.
But...things have changed DRASTICALLY this year!

This year...I am feeling different about the
holiday "splurge" deal we hear about each year.
We have some very strange climate, solar and
geologic conditions that are hitting us right in
the face (and the pocketbook) this year...and it
is frankly, depressing as shit!

My feeling is...GO FOR BROKE this Christmas.
If you can't afford store-bought gifts, start to
get busy right away with what talents at crafts
that you may have to design lovely personalized
gifts for your loved ones. BAKE A COOKIE!

I think that the "shite" will hit the fan SOON
...and into 2015 and we need to really "PARTY DOWN"
this year! Sorry to have to say it...but this may
actually be our last "hurrah." (Sorry
to sound doomy!)

If you celebrate and the world continues to gind
on--great, all the better! But my thinking is
to have a really great time, help others to celebrate
like there's NO tomorrow--because there may not
be one! GO SANTA! GO SANTA! (And, yeah...go to church!)
cheer

"...Hey! If I've got to endure Polar Vortex -35 below...
ebola AND CMEs from a Jupiter-sized sun spot...the
least you can do is celebrate Christmas this year!"

Re: Breaking FREE from the Insanity and Stress of CHRISTMAS COMMOTION with Positivity and Integrity! (Includes POLL)
When I was a kid the whole extended family of 30 or so would pack under one roof at three different places. (dad’s side of the family, step-dad’s family, and finally mom’s side for the rest of the evening) It was a hugely stressful and very long day.

Christmas is supposed to be a celebration of the birth of Christ and it is also family time at our house. In recent years, we have really scaled back gifts, huge meals, and massive numbers of people. We still go to my mom’s and dad’s separately, but extended aunts and uncles and cousins each do their own thing now and we aren’t carting $100’s in shopping bags or pounds of food for hundreds of miles anymore. Lunch and dinner are light as are the gifts. At my mom’s house, my step-dad reads the Christmas story from the book of Luke. It is so much more peaceful and I believe respectful of the celebration of the birth of Christ.

My grown children and the entire family stopped buying gifts many many years ago. We all just enjoy the lights, decorations, and each other.

We don't travel, even though I have a son 400 miles away, we just see each other during the rest of the year when easy to do so.

Its so easy for all of us.

We do get together with those in town at my daughters house on christmas day and just laugh and eat, so easy sweet and gentle.

I wish this for all. Those who want to get gifts for children under 12 do, those who do not are not even noticed.

Re: Breaking FREE from the Insanity and Stress of CHRISTMAS COMMOTION with Positivity and Integrity! (Includes POLL)
Husband and I have completely and proactively taken control of our lives and simply stepped aside from any and all Christmas commotion.

Anyone can do this! Even if you believe you "have" to participate, you too can take positive control and step aside from the insanity.

Start now, before Thanksgiving! Let every word out of your mouth regarding Christmas be gracious and positive.

State simply -- first to family, then to aquaintances -- that in the interest of simplicity and good mental health you are just stepping aside from any involvement in Christmas. Announce it like the good thing that it is --positively! -- just like you would announce that you have quit smoking, lost 30 pounds of excess weight, or gotten a promotion.

You are not only liberating yourself, but liberating others!

Wish good cheer and a happy day to all who choose to observe it. Emphasize simplicity, reflection, and de-stressing when you discuss your own choices.

Plan your own wholesome, solitary activities -- or lack thereof -- for Dec 25th! Taking a hike in the quiet woods, go birdwatching, or curl up and read a good book. Rake leaves or prepare ground for a spring garden. Cut firewood, paint the shed. Go running, or work out with weights. Clean house, or do home repairs undisturbed.

Make it your day for quiet, contemplative activity or relaxation that puts you in touch with nature or the simple humdrum rhythms of life.

Graciously thank everyone who invites you to Christmas events. Forthrightly explain that you appreciate the invitation, but that you have other plans. And you do have other plans! Satisfying ones!

Don't get up on some high horse about it. Explain your choices simply and forthrightly.

If the discussion gets around to giftgiving, just plainly, firmly, and kindly state that you are not giving any. AND state that if anyone mistakenly gives you a gift, that you will first offer it back to them, and if they refuse it, that you will donate it -- unopened -- to a local charity.

Hold firm, and do not give in to emotional blackmail, threats, or whining. Hold your ground, then hold it all the firmer. Get to where you can speak from the heart, the mind, the rational intellect and the gut all at once, and with conviction upon the subject. This may take practice, but it can be done, and done in good spirit without malice.

Yes, you will have to earn your freedom. Your decision will likely "cost" you broken family relations... with the people who don't give a shit about you anyway!

You will likely find yourself much respected by the few people whose opinion you really care about.

You CAN reclaim your integrity! Just graciously say 'Thank you, but NO thank you' to Christmas commotion.

Retailers can't even say Merry Christmas and promote Jesus Christ on their flyers and in their stores.

so, fine.
we get it.

This Christian and my entire family, friends and accountancies have had enough of this PC anti Christian bigotry.

we have all decided to not shop ( ALL YEAR ), in any secular establishment, that includes restaurants, theatres, stores, etc.
