Facebook tracks everything you do on the web and they use that data for advertising among other things. you shouldnt be surprised you agreed to it in there terms and conditions.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 32621395

No....you don't understand what I'm saying. I'm saying that this is information that was NEVER PUT ON A COMPUTER either on Facebook or in Google or in an email or anything else. This is information that was obviously acquired through LISTENING THROUGH THE COMPUTER MIC and then putting the info through some process that creates ads on Facebook that relate directly to the topic that was being discussed.

This is NOT information that was openly written or shared on Facebook. These are private verbal conversations that are obviously being monitored for commercial (and I'm sure, other) purposes.

credit cards are also tied to it along with reward clubs. they have all the data they need on you and everyone. i know from experience. your life is predictable, they know exactly what you will do and how you will react. they know your thoughts and have chemically attached to your DNnnnnnnnnA

don't want to believe it but I know it's true
yes, OP, I've noticed this - and I have a bandaid over the all seeing eye in my laptop. something tells me the tech is sooooo much more advanced than we know.

Re: Audio Spying on Your Computers - Does Facebook LISTEN to us? Be Aware.
I am throwing this out there for thought and discussion. Has anyone had the experience where you have been discussing a topic - verbally - not something you have written an email about or Googled or used the computer on - and an AD comes up on Facebook that day (or maybe next day but usually same day) about the SAME TOPIC YOU HAVE BEEN DISCUSSING?

For example....you might be discussing something fairly unusual like....Filipino geneaology...and an ad will show up on Facebook for something directly related to that. And you only discussed it verbally with someone else in the house - NOT via the computer at all. Perhaps you've discussed something like oh....Smith Brothers cough drops (haven't seen them in an eon) and an ad will pop up on your Facebook that day for Smith Brothers.

I don't know how common this is and I don't see people discussing it but I wanted to raise the issue.

NOTICE YOUR FACEBOOK ADS IN THE FUTURE AND SEE IF THEY REFLECT ANY PRODUCTS OR TOPICS YOU'VE BEEN DISCUSSING RECENTLY.

My point? I think that they are actually listening to at least some of us via the computers and translating part of this information into advertising (that shows up on Facebook). We can guess where the rest goes. I don't know if Facebook has to be open for this to happen, or if it happens anyway. Now personally I NEVER use Facebook so I can't test it for myself. But I have been told this, so I figure you guys are a good test sample.

Be aware of your Facebook ads in the future and see if they reflect anything you've been discussing just verbally recently. this is NOT the same as Google ads that might reflect your email as they read all our emails anyway. This is LISTENING.

OP, this has happened to me a couple times but it was a few years ago so I don't recall all the details. In the past few years I've been using a [link to www.godlikeproductions.com] that prevents me from seeing ads so I don't know if its still happening. I was a bit freaked out when it happened though!

But...

I'm not on Facebook or Twitter.

I don't have a smart phone or android phone, just a regular cell phone. And I keep the phone in a carry bag, not on my person.

I put tape over the camera on my laptop.

And I do believe they have the technology to do this and they're not telling us about it.

Buy used machines.
Take the machines apart, clean them out.
Gut the webcam and microphone out.
Put machine back together.
Install GNU/Linux.
Stay away from social engineering sites.

Enjoy your piece of mind.

Good advice.

Another good thing to keep in mind are the trojans some of the chinese manufacturers add to the hard drives...

Brand new Seagate hard drives ship with Trojan virus

[link to www.geek.com]
another case with Seagate and trojans:
[link to www.dslreports.com]

that of course is no accident at all... Not a brand to be trusted at all.

Like Lenovo:
Spy agencies ban Lenovo PCs on security concerns

it's a pos brand anyway.

I'm going to try this by throwing out something totally random while on the phone with my best friend and we'll discuss it, using the keyword multiple times. We'll both have FB open and then watch our ads for a few days. I'll let you know what shows up.

Do any of you dumbasses ever read the terms and conditions associated with services?

Take Google for example.

"We collect information in two ways:

Information that you give us.
For example, many of our services require you to sign up for a Google Account. When you do, we’ll ask for personal information, such as your name, email address, telephone number or credit card number. If you want to take full advantage of the sharing features that we offer, we might also ask you to create a publicly visible Google Profile, which may include your name and photo.

Information that we get from your use of our services.
We may collect information about the services that you use and how you use them, such as when you visit a website that uses our advertising services or you view and interact with our ads and content.

This information includes:
Device information
We may collect device-specific information (such as your hardware model, operating system version, unique device identifiers and mobile network information, including phone number). Google may associate your device identifiers or phone number with your Google Account.

Log information
When you use our services or view content provided by Google, we may automatically collect and store certain information in server logs. This may include:
details of how you used our service, such as your search queries, telephony log information, such as your phone number, calling-party number, forwarding numbers, time and date of calls, duration of calls, SMS routing information and types of calls.Internet protocol address.
device event information, such as crashes, system activity, hardware settings, browser type, browser language, the date and time of your request and referral URL,cookies that may uniquely identify your browser or your Google Account.

Location information
When you use a location-enabled Google service, we may collect and process information about your actual location, such as GPS signals sent by a mobile device. We may also use various technologies to determine location, such as sensor data from your device that may, for example, provide information on nearby Wi-Fi access points and mobile towers.

Unique application numbers
Certain services include a unique application number. This number and information about your installation (for example, the operating system type and application version number) may be sent to Google when you install or uninstall that service or when that service periodically contacts our servers, such as for automatic updates.

Local storage
We may collect and store information (including personal information) locally on your device, using mechanisms such as browser web storage (including HTML 5) and application data caches.

That's exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about. It's not something they get from anything you've written on the computer....it's the things you talk about verbally in what you think is the privacy of your home or car....it shows that they're LISTENING to us as well. It's probably not just Facebook either.....

Absolutely, I don't see ads on GLP either so it's not affecting me here, and I don't use Facebook or Twitter or any of those sites. I think the effect on me has been minimal. But my source uses Facebook particularly and that's where the ads have been noted. They MUST have technology to do this, I'm glad I started this thread as there have been many confirmations from others that they are in fact, LISTENING in on our private conversations in our homes and probably cars as well. Any place a computer can reach..

It's hardly crap, you idiot. I know someone who has personally experienced this several times, and you can see from the posts on this thread alone, that many other people have experienced the same thing....which indicates that although it has not yet received widespread acknowledgement (it might be a relatively new program, like within the past year or two)....THEY ARE LISTENING TO US VIA OUR COMPUTERS AND PHONES IN THE PRIVACY OF OUR HOMES AND CARS.

Now if you have any brains at all....you should be concerned with this. Whether one has ad block or not is not the issues, it just means you don't see their ads...it doesn't mean THEY'RE NOT LISTENING.

I think I missed something in all the bullshit you just threw out. Where in there does it give Google permission to LISTEN TO OUR PRIVATE VERBAL CONVERSATIONS IN OUR CARS AND HOMES MADE TO OTHER LIVING PERSONS AND NOT VIA A COMPUTER OR PHONE??????? These are conversations when a person was NOT using a phone or computer but just talking to a family member or friend about something in what they thought was a private location. How does Google get the "permission" to eavesdrop on our private conversations?

You better wake up. They're doing it to YOU, too.

I disable my webcam and audio as well as duct tape over my cam...

I think there are probably ways for them to see us through the screen, but not a whole lot we can do about it unless we just stop using the electronics and burn them all.

and I do not use facebook...have it blocked ...found that sometimes you click on a site and I use no script and it tells me that facebook wants access..screw that.

It's weird because sometimes my husband and I will be talking about something, and I'll go to look it up on my phone and it will be the top choice in the search engine. And most of the things we talk about are farm related so they aren't common topics.

In fact most of the words aren't even in auto correct for texting.

Yeah it happens with other sites to. I had a friend give me a link for a currency trader after I visited it every single day after that I have been seeing buy silver and gold ads, as well as Buy dinar ads. Just ticks me off. Just because I visit a site doesn't mean I am interested in buying something.

As for them monitoring all my posts on GLP, they most likely haven't found a dang thing interesting enough yet.

Maybe my profile says I hang out with idiots??? I was for some time but now stay away from idiots. It wasn't easy but I cut all ties with idiots that believed doom would happen daily, or a GCR. Seems like I am still waiting on both after years of hearing it will happen today catfilenails

This has happened twice to us, that we've noticed. The most recent was a couple weeks ago. We had a group of people in our home, some were on phones/iPads, not browsing though. FB wasn't open. Husband went on the computer later that evening and an ad for a single handed comment he made, was right there on FB. He'd never searched for it before, had just made the one-off comment.

I fully believe that's what they are doing. It happened before, but at that time I dismissed it, though it did creep me out.

I think the spying systems are far more advanced than people realize. Yes, they CAN do all these things, and they'll be doing more in the future.

I would love to see services that come about where people can rremove chips or spying devices from these machines or we can figure out how to block them. We have an absolute right to privacy - only slaves have no privacy.

I have a feeling something is going on. I've thought SOMETHING was listening to me on numerous occasions.

While playing the single player campaing in Battlefield 4 (PC) you hear the word "Tombstone" often in some missions because that is what your team is called.

Anyways, after I stopped playing sometime last week, I started seeing Tombstone pizza adds pop up, which I thought was really strange.

If it's a coincidence, it's a strange one.

I think it might be a relatively new program as I'm now seeing more and more people saying this. It might have been going on for at least a year or two. Unlike emails or written stuff or telephone recording that they've been doing for a LOONG time. Keep looking for it and telling others!
