That's true and a good idea, but I also want people to consider that ANYTHING WITH A COMPUTER CHIP IN IT, could be used to spy on us, including the basic mechanics of our new TVs, appliances, cars....we don't know the full extent of what spying is even possible now. I focus on the Facebook thing because...it's easily confirmed. But what if they're able to spy on us with things that are not obvious and that don't try to sell things to us? We have to be wary of ANYTHING that has computer chips in it!

Yes, any electronic device but in order to do something with that information it would have to connected to the Internet either wired or wireless unless someone if coming along and downloading data from it in person.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4396096

that's quite a list of things, and I never would have thought of them! But with Wifi, maybe we're not really sure of what actually IS connected to the Internet (or whatever the govt is using) at any point! I've heard talk recently that they may come out with light bulbs that have Wifi built in so maybe there is already technology out there (or out there soon) with non-obvious connectivity. Something that might be...in the air, so to speak, rather than something we all individually need to turn on.

I think the core here is that we can't eliminate all the technology (nor would we want to) but we have to change the psychology in our government/corporate world that allows them to think they CAN and SHOULD be able to do this. This kind of thing should be as unthinkable as walking naked down the street....we could all do it I guess, but who really wants to. Spying must become UNTHINKABLE and something the people simply won't accept or permit as the attitude precedes the technology.

Happens with Tv and radio too. I chalk that up to coincidence.

I do remember them talking about putting recievers in our TV's/cable boxes and chips in our products so they could see what we were buying and direct advertising to specific customers.

I truly believe this is happening NOW. Digital TV and required "boxes" to have access to television. plus, clearing up the airwaves for more important and nefarious signals.

Ebay tracks, google tracks, facebook and twitter track. tou can see it on the choices of ads they display. I am fairly certain that if they can gain access to your microphone then they will.

That is a great thread, AC, thanks for posting!!!! A couple of folks said it took about a week to see the ads, but my source is seeing it the same day or within a day or so. Maybe they've refined it.

Folks, try the test....talk around your computer about some product that you havent' seen for a long time, or something that is unusual. Marinated pork bellies with lime juice - oh, I don't know, lol...and see if some ad comes up on FB or YT or other program relating to that within a couple of days. It might be pretty quick it might not.

Or maybe as some folks have done, allude to an obscure medical program or surgical procedure and see if you can get it to create ads for you.

Holy moley, the Fat Man in Austin just mentioned exactly what we're talking about today! That you could be talking about something privately and with the spying, ads will then show up on your phone or computer! How's that for timely????

and here I thought I was going nuts!!! I've noticed this has been going on for quite a while now, spooked me out as I noticed the same thing about ads popping up related to conversations going on in the room, that yes the topic at hand was never "searched" for on the computer. I can safely say I'm not paranoid, yet, just security conscious. Excellent post OP

Thank you, my friend, that's exactly why I posted this thread - because so many of us either think it's "coincidence" or...it's "just us"...when it's happening on a much larger scale and is obviously part of an ongoing (and probably expanding) program of spying that affects all of us.

I think awareness of this seems to be growing so I wonder when someone will actually ask the droids over at Fakebook or Google, etc., about this practice of spying on us and then producing ads that mysteriously pop up about the topic we were "privately" discussing.

Also, a great point is made about why does Google seem to own the Internet? The Internet was actually developed and paid for by American tax payer dollars so it should belong...TO US!!!!!! We paid DARPA who developed it - WE should own it!!!

I actually posted about it on "fakebook" to bring it to other peoples attention as well *I'm sure a good majority will think I've gone nuts" but what I'm really interested in is since I've brought it up on "Fakebook" will the ads *spying* stop for a while? or will it continue on as usual? I've got a friend in on it as well who's going to join me in an experiment on this, should be interesting, makes me want to dust off my copy of 1984 for some reason

Yes, this happens with my android phone. I have a word search game on there. Many many times, specific words from a conversation I had just had, will show up in my word search game. I'm not saying like coincidental, I'm saying like specific words. One time my girlfriend and I were talking about repairs on her car, things like fuel injectors, and spark plug cables, then a short time later, I was playing the word search and all of those words were in the search. This type of thing has happened many times, with many different types of subject matter.

Yep, our technology is listening.

I think that's an excellent approach - try manipulating the system to see what it responds to. My guess is that it's pretty automated so the ads will probably continue, but who knows. You might try throwing out more bizarre stuff to see what kinds of ads you get - medical problems or surgical procedures, etc...and take screen shots to show people. I don't know how widespread this is - if it's something that EVERYONE is being exposed to or if they're trying it with "test" groups. I'll be interested to see if your posting about this on Fakebook stays up!

You can always refer people to these threads on GLP too!

No, that's not what this thread is about. We all understand that we can spied on by what we type into the computer - whether through emails or Google or whatever.

What we're talking about is spying VIA THE MICROPHONE on computers and phones as we can be talking about really obscure things in private VERBAL ONLY conversations at home or in the car, and people are seeing that ads will show up on Facebook or You Tube, etc, that relate specifically to whatever they were verbally discussing. This is NOT about typing anything INTO the computer. It's about them LISTENING TO US and being able to record and process what we say and turn it into advertising (and other things, I'm sure).

OP, do you have an Android phone? Google listens through your Android phone then serves ads to your computer based on what it hears. Wouldn't be suprised if they listen through the mic on your computer too though.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4396096

I do, but it wasn't me that this happened to. I don't use Facebook so....I guess I'm a lost cause for ads. This was told to me by someone specifically about Facebook ads, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if they were listening on the cell phones too. Anything with a mic. And we can't forget the cameras either.

Thanks for bringing that up, excellent point. Actually I don't think my source has a Google phone, just some kind of really basic cell phone. These seem to be conversations that took place in the house though, among family members.

I have heard this too, and it might be true for all I know. I wonder if taking the battery out helps. But I wanted people to focus specifically on their computers and Facebook because the ads apparrently have been pretty....specific. I mean about products and services that are not commonly used or mentioned.

I have seen this reported by many people I know personally and witnessed it myself. I have heard shock and dismay even a couple of years ago that verbal conversations were turning into ads on their phones and Facebook pages. A skilled computer jockey can monitor outgoing connections to find out if anything is being transmitted unless this is some kind of NSA backdoor jive that's buried so deep it's invisible.

They have the right to turn your cellphones audio app on even if you turn it off, but only though facebook and only if facebook is loaded. I would assume this includes the desktop computer as well.
