Recoveries do happen with spacecrafts. The most notable example being SOHO (a nearly 18 year old spacecraft). It was actually lost less than 3 years after launch but as you see it's hard working since then. Here is a detailed description of the whole recovery operation. Some things I find strange about ISON.

It was discovered very far away, past Jupiters orbit which is insanely far away to discover a sun grazer comet.

Plus, the comet has the name of the scope, not the person discovering it.

Aside from the "official" discovery, it appears to me this thing was discovered by effort in secret means.

Because we conveniently knew it's orbit much sooner after discover then normal. Almost as if it was already known.

Or this is a replica utilizing the same ground station (command center) as the first. Knowing full well they were going to be smashing rocks in space, there had to be tests.

Now we are going hot and ISON is at the right place at the right time for this impactor to nail ISON.

OR the incoming life forms following ISON disabled the impacting device viewing it as a threat. Or at least an inconvenience not worth dealing with.

When the threat is past, it turns back on.

Deep Impact is at the right place to USE the Suns gravity to accelerate the impacting mass TOWARDS ISON. To get the best bang, it would make sense to hit head on each other. Which the Deep Impact probe is in the PERFECT place.

Seriously, Deep Impact is in the PERFECT place to hit ISON with as much velocity as possible. Remember, the impacting part is very heavy and rockets will provide a terrible rate of acceleration.

The Sun, however, will work GREAT to pull in a large mass. AND the debris will be fired into the Sun.

It can't be any more perfectly aligned right now.
