I think most of it already has been said Sim and in your heart you know you can not let this opportunity slip. Because that is what it is, an opportunity, a challenge not a threat. Look at it this way, if you are born to be a dollar, why would you settle for staying a dime? You obviously are a dollar.

In my 40 years of managing I hired quite a few people myself, mostly from within the company by observing them in their daily job in total different departmens. And there were only three things that were key for me with that; People skills, initiative and eager to learn. Of course they would need a basis of intellect, but next to these three skills everything else can be taught. Diploma's and all that has always been subjective to me. I know I am old skool with that nowadays, but to me authority comes from the heart, not a name tag on your chest.

I have been told upfront by many of them they thought they couldn't handle the job, but I kept saying I believed in them based on those three skills. My gut feeling and eye for people has never failed me. They made the greatest team together. And the benefit for me that even in the toughest situations we always managed to find solutions together. THe department grew in so many ways. There was no 9 to 5 mentality, no discussion about workload and such. When one was too busy, the others helped. We failed and succeeded together. For what it is worth, in overwhelming majority we succeeded ;-)

Your future boss seems to be like that as well. She sees those three skills in you, combined with your long time experience. Do you think she (and others, clients and such) would have noticed your skills if you were, with all respect, an average worker bee?

And look at it this way Sim. You are stuck in your current job, in appreciation, in workload, routine etc., it already lead to a near burn out two years ago. In my non medical opinion that is the core reason for your anxiety. And I will tell you that if you do not take this opportunity, a short time from now you will beat yourself up for it and might end up in a severe burn out and that will throw you back for a very long time to come.

Even if after a while in this new position you come to the conclusion that it isn't what you expected, the benefit of it is that you at least got rid of the millstone around your neck that is your current job. You are at an age where you are still very employable and wanted in the field you are in. Even though I can't see it happen, realizing that you reached your limits is not failure. It is a learning experience. But you will succeed.

I think you will do great in this new job from all the character signs I see in you. It will make you breathe again. Of course there's a lot to learn. You are curious, eager to learn, so even that is a positive challenge.

There is one thing that is important to be aware of and that is the non-compete clause. I don't know if you have that in YOUR current contract, but make sure that everything is clear in that respect between the companies when you say yes and before you quit your current job, so that you are not being put in the middle of that discussion. You are a big asset to your current boss, so if such a clause exist in your current contract, they might fight hard to keep you from taking this job, even though it is a big step up for you. Non-compete clauses can be a big legal deal in certain fields. Hopefully in this situation that is not the case.

From my managing experience I have a few more practical tips for you in that respect, but since I already wrote a book here, I will put those in a private message later if you like?

In closing, I see this as a perfect, logical and needed next step in your career. One you deserve and with the right guidance for sure will excel in. You know you have the backing and believe of your new boss, your whole family and all the support from your friends here.

This job sounds like a blessing from God...some of your anxiety surely has been caused by your current job environment; perhaps the new job with nicer people and better all-around conditions.
