All sides including You ,Mini and her BF need to agree on this. And that's good deal in my opinion. They will be with You not strangers who can charge them with high rent costs based on their behavior or whatever he thinks he can do.All of this in years when rent costs are so high

Re: Earthquake Thread ~ Always Updated*5.1 Mariana Islands*5.0 Mariana Islands ~ Pg 20373
I'm interested in everyone's thoughts on this scenario...

Mini's boyfriend is in a pickle and needs some help. He's currently living with his dad, but his dad is moving out on the 1st and not taking her BF with him. He can't. He's renting a room from someone. So mini's BF is very much stuck right now. Needs a place to stay while he figures out what to do.

He likely would end up moving in with his greedy ass mom when she gets her own living situation figured out God knows when. And then paying all her bills and never having the opportunity to save up for his own place.

Soooo...mini asked if he could stay here for a while and pay us rent/help with bills (again giving him no opportunity to save money for his own place).

Nef had an idea. Our proposal to them is between the 2 of them, we want $500 per week. And he can stay here for 2 months. At the end of the 2 months, we will give all of that money back to them so that they can get an apartment and actually have the money for first, last and security. Basically, we would be a forced savings account. Ultimately they would be given back $4,000 (maybe even slightly higher). We wouldn't charge anything additional to what they'd be given back at the end.

We would provide home cooked meals (most nights of the week) and suck up the costs for 2 months of the added water bills, electricity, etc. We would also help provide things needed for their apartment once they get into one in a couple of months.

Reasonable???

You seem to like the guy and trust him, so I think letting him move in for a bit is ok. As far as the terms, IMO I think you are doing too much. If you are going to give them all the rent $ back as a means to get their own place (which is very kind), at the least I think they need to work towards furnishing it themselves. If they are old enough to move out on their own and live together as a couple, then they should be capable of doing more to get themselves to that point vs. you having to do so much. And I know you don't mind doing it because that's who you are, but it's not about that. It's about them proving they are responsible and ready for this by putting forth more effort than you.

My other questions that could factor in... Do they have steady work? Last I heard you were upset w/Mini because she wasn't working at all, and when she does she doesn't stick it out long. That doesn't jive well with being 100% on your own. Do they understand what they are committing to with a lease in both of their names, and the problems this could present if they broke up or for any other reason wanted out of the lease early (realized they couldn't afford it, etc)? Are they aware of all the other life expenses and bills they may not have thought of beyond rent/utilities and have they written all this out to ensure their income will cover all of it?

I guess the bottom line is I support him moving in for a specified period, but as far as the plans to move in together I worry if they are ready for it and if they can truly afford it, especially in this economy that will probably get worse before it gets better. I know they are both smart kids with good intentions, but they are still pretty young so that's where my worry comes from.

On a separate note, you are a great mom to care and want to help so much.

Appreciate your thought out reply, always.

As far as helping them once they get a place, it would just be smaller things like pots and pans and glasses (that we have extra of). I did explain to mini that they would have to get their own furniture (aside from a bedroom set that she already has). She has been working full time for a bit now, after the blowout from my getting so frustrated. She likes her job and is working full time. He has had the same full time job for years now and recently got a second job. Both have some money in their savings accounts.

This all just got thrown at us today and I only had about a half hour with her when she was on her lunch break to try to go in depth with what this all entails. We will further discuss in the next few days. I agree 100% that they both need to fully understand the commitment involved.

I do worry that this could ultimately hurt her financially. Worst case scenario, she learns a tough lesson and needs to come back home...ALONE. This would be his one chance to stay here temporarily. If things don't happen to work out in the real world, he will have to go with his mom.

But it will teach them both responsibility and ultimately be their way out to having their own place.

The biggest problem I see, is the soaring cost of apartments now, which will only increase over time. Cheap here is $2,500. Even if not that high there, it is still increasing weekly as inflation goes up.

If neither can afford to move out because of the skyrocketing inflation, then how are you going to handle this?

I don't have much of a backup plan, other than if it doesn't work out when they try to go on their own, they each go back to their moms. It just stinks, because he doesn't have a great mom. Not that I'm some super mom, but she sucks quite frankly. He's a good guy. This is a tough and tricky situation.

Well, if they know what they're getting into and feel ready, then they may as well give it a go. Hopefully they can find a place they're comfortable with in their budget. I wish them luck (if this happens).
