My woman is Belgian and that's what she said.

It is traditional around here and in many places to blacken the face with soot at certain times of the year, namely those times when people get up to mischief, around here it is directly related to smuggling, and the blackening of the face is to avoid being seen and thus arrested.. however some still consider it racist...

It's part of dutch culture if you like it or not. Nothing you can do about, if you don't like dutch culture, like many other europeans, you can always leave Holland, except you prefer to stay here because of economical reasons.

Not sure how I feel about Piet, saw the parade in Amsterdam last year it was a lot of fun. The 'black by climbing the chimney' makes me roll my eyes though. It's easy to consider yourself racially tolerant when all your slavery was in the colonies.

Instead of Sinterklaas,the UN will knock on Belgium's door too......
