Robert Levi, a councillor with the Elsipogtog First Nation, said he went to the protest site early Thursday after hearing the RCMP had moved in to begin enforcing the injunction.

Levi said police pepper-sprayed dozens of people after 9:30 a.m. when he arrived with the chief and council.

“They sprayed the crowd that was there,” he said in an interview. “The chief was manhandled a little bit and all hell broke loose.”

The RCMP blocked Route 134 on Sept. 29 after a protest began spilling onto the road. Protesters subsequently cut down trees that were placed across another part of the road, blocking the entrance to the compound.

The protesters, who include members of the Elsipogtog First Nation, want SWN Resources to stop seismic testing and leave the province.

Premier David Alward did not return messages seeking comment, but last week he and Chief Arren Sock agreed to set up a working group to find a resolution. Meetings were held in Fredericton and Moncton.

At the time, Alward said: “I can say that we have a consensus that we’re working towards finding a peaceful resolution and we will continue that work.” He said the working group, which would include members from his government, Elsipogtog and the energy industry, would begin its work immediately.


I hope they win and the fracking will be stopped.

I wish that the American public had that much spirit and willingness. Now, we'll roll over for a Big Mac.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. So many people have tried to fight against fracking and lost. Is it possible they just gave up too soon? Has the world just needed a strong united group of people willing to die to protect the land? Or are they just nuts trying to fight against big corp and the legal system?

Personally, while i am against the fracking, i think the natives are shooting themselves in the foot. They have turned this into a race war, and now no one can focus on the real issue. The youth are getting into the officer's faces, foul mouthed and confrontational, then crying on facebook about the fact that the cops have guns aimed at them. This is not going to end well.

I think this is an important thread. It may be small town doom, but it is a good way towatch real time what happens when a group of people have had too much and fight back. This is a small scale of what will happen down the road in bigger cities and with more people. It should be pinned.

When people are poisoning your home, you do whatever you can. You fight, you fight, you fight. You said it yourself, people give up too soon. This may not be the most ideal way for them to stand up for themselves, but they are standing up for themselves. Either die trying to stop it or slowly, poisoned by your own complacency. I could have guessed it would be the Natives to stand up first.

i completely agree with you. I am not saying they are not risking their lives for a very good cause, and if fracking comes to my town i would be grateful for people trying to stop it. I just mean that because of their actions, no one is even talking about fracking. it is now a racial fight. no one is even talking about fracking anymore. now all of facebook is going on about police brutality. the real issue is lost, and i fear that means the fight will be too.

Very true, but I don't feel that that is the agenda they are pushing, most likely the media. They are happy to distract from real causes. Remember the occupy movement and how the media kept claiming the protesters didn't know what they wanted? Just help keep it on topic by acknowledging what they are really fighting for!

i dont htink it is "agenda" it is just what is happening. More and more natives are flocking to the site, but now it isnt about fracking, they are only going to back up their fellow natives against the police. the real issue is now dead.
