The churches received official tax-ememption status in 1984. That was only 1/2 of the deal though. What is not often mentioned was that many churches agreed to not preach against or criticize the government in exchange for that tax-exemption status (which was unofficially in place before 1984). Since then, most every denomination has become liberal and even supportive of the government.

My church has had classes on the constitution. Pastor doesn't come right out and say which side he is on, but it's pretty clear. I truly believe if push came to shove and it was a matter of protecting our faith, he would speak up.
I'm not sure where this peaceful, wimpy Jesus came from. The hippies or something? Jesus freaked out and overturned tables of the money changers in the temple.
