I had the same thing happen to me. I almost felt like I was going to break apart.
It has taken years to come to peace--to find that I can still believe in God; yet, see God a little differently.

For example, I went and read the Gnostic gospels and realized that Jesus might have been teaching ideas that might be considered closer to quantum physics or something like that. Find the things Jesus was saying to the Pharisees in the temple in Thomas's gospel and you will be shocked. Look at his miracles and how angry the pharisees were and think of it in a different light. Why were they so scared?

Oh, I know all the pat answers that we have been taught; but, what if he was really showing people the reality of the way the world works and that information was scaring them (walking on water, water into wine, etc. (read the gospel of Thomas for that info).

I still don't have answers, but I am trying to find them and I can say this is a hard path.

One thing I know is this; You can't make yourself believe something that you just don't believe and the path of discovery will still lead you to God--maybe a bigger and greater God than you have ever imagined.

In the meantime, I am pretty sure that God loves honesty--so it is probably best to be honest with yourself and with God and then go from there.
