I'm 41 years old, and I have NEVER heard thunder like I heard last night. Keep in mind, I'm surrounded by mountains, so acoustics played a part - but the storm was strange. Quoting: AnathemaTNO When it first rolled in every hair on my head was standing up. Not a normal storm, for sure. Usually in a bad storm I may get a strike near my house that is just deafening..This storm was 30 minutes of that...seemed like mortars were being dropped around my house.. Central West Virginia...I'm 58 years old, so this is not my first storm; about 9:45-10:00pm Aug. 21st. Caught completely unaware by a storm that looked on intellicast, to be nothing special, but boy, was I wrong! |

It's the strength of the electrical current where the lightning is striking, causing it to be much louder and much more stronger. Hard to say when to predict any of these but they happen mostly during heat driven days. H W S A X R E P O D L A |

Quoting: Rara Avis I am aware of what you say, and I also noticed earlier in the day, cumulus clouds gathering at maybe 70,000(?) ft. But this storm seemed terribly 'alive with electricity' for some reason. |

I live in MD and was on the road last night from 8 to 10:30 p.m. The weather was WILD. Lightning like I've never seen before - massive hits that looked like they were right on top of us. It would pour down rain and then stop completely, pour down rain and stop completely - over and over for at least an hour. It definitely set my nerves on edge and I've been driving for over 35 years. I was really glad to get home. |

Today however I have never seen or heard such extreme lightning and thunder. This thunder was so loud it was setting off car alarms and shaking pictures on my wall. The flashes were so bright and continuous it looked like the kickoff of a Superbowl! It all came out of nowhere and lasted a good 45 minutes..Anyone else in the North NJ / NYC area experience this storm this morning? Quoting: DooobieDooobieDo I know we tend to exaggerate now and then here on GLP but today has convinced me that things are really changing as far as the weather. I'm still in shock! I'm "down the shore", and was surprised to hear about that storm. We got absolutely nothing here. Anonymous Coward User ID: 36998602 United States 08/27/2013 04:03 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I wrote this a few days ago...sort of like them there day-ja-voos thingz... I cannot begin to describe the horrific nature of this lightning. Bolt after bolt of it and it is not even on the local weather radar. No mention of it was made on the evening news. They said quite clearly that it was going to be a quiet evening. My brother from the Seattle area told me of his lightning storm a few days ago that was something he had not seen before. Tonight it was my turn to call him. Never in all my years of enjoying storms have I seen such bright, non-stop, bolt after bolt of bright lightning. Several bolts seemed to hit in the large yard next door. The sheer brightness of it blinded us both for a moment or so. Well, if that Patty Brassard was right about the strange outrageous lightning we are to encounter...she might be right about a very large earthquake to follow in a few days. Top off the strangeness with the date of August 24, and the plot thickens. Just thought I would share this with you. Watch the skies! (I had to add that.) |
