People, the russian meteorologists predicted that we will have a very heavy winter! They said it on TV, so have no link, nor waste my time to search!

No doubt about it - this year's temperatures are going to reach a record low! I don't read 'experts' - I look at the nature around me. Every year I've been right. Last year I couldn't pick a single blackberry, there just weren't any, and the rowan trees were bare. This meant an unusually mild winter, which it was. But this year! There are enough blackberries to open a fruit factory, and the rowan boughs are bent with the weight of berries. Means a damned big chill.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 39162401

I totally agree with ur theory...and yes, i had noticed that amount of berries compared to last year is much bigger
 Quoting: Nanna-Ree

really no blackberries where i live i had loads made 27 jars of jam with the massive kilner jars... I love jam!... there were loads maybe u were not foraging well i mean in the right place... however localised factors may have been at play... all i can say is there are sum leaves fallin but not as many as normal this time of year... the oaks are still full... beach and alder are also still full and tonnes of berries... i collect and forrage for many things from jams to cough syrup... however weather and its localised effects can mean people may experience differences... i just feel lucky i have so much jam <3

Re: UK Winter preparedness & weather predictions 2013/14
I tend to have premonitory dreams (eg before 9/11, I had two dreams of planes hitting an office building, and the aftermath), and I've had THREE recent dreams showing that our winters in Britain are going to be freezing, and for the next 30 years! And that this winter too will be bad, as each winter will be a little colder than the last.
I'm not trying to convince anyone, but I am taking it seriously. I'd love some snow, but we never get any in the far west of Cornwall! Like most of us, it's the cost of heating that worries me.

Living in one of the coldest city on earth, I speak from experience.

Winter is like a box of chocolates.
You never know what you are going to get, no matter how hard they try to predict it.

Be prepared. Learn to love it or gtfo.

MY WINTER PREDICTION 2013/2014 -

Last year I put my neck on the line and done this with great accuracy and so many of you have asked for it again. What started out as a bit of fun has become a little more serious. Firstly I'm very sorry to those that don't like the snow. I'm not to pleased either. So without further ado, here it is -

If anyone in the UK likes the cold, deep frosts and snow then winter 2013/2014 is going to be a biggy!

For now and the next couple of weeks mild days 16 degrees plus with chilly starts in the morning with heavy mist and fog at times with above average temps enabling jacket free days to be thrown into the mix but watch out for the rain that might catch you out on jacket free days until the second week of October.

Windy at the end of October to rattle the remaining leaves out of the trees. Last few days of October moving into November the cold arrives overnight to almost tease us into thinking winter has arrived early and then temps rise slightly again during the day 7 to 11 degrees. It's all change, change, change from November 12th – 24th with an almighty temperature drop pretty much arriving overnight.

Look out for deep frosts that will look like Jack Frost has been out in force with his troops. The frost will be very heavy and unusual in its appearance and not how we would conceive a frost to be, look at the beauty it leaves on everything it touches, rather enchanting to look at.

I feel once we get past mid-November winter arrives early destroying the remaining days of autumn but again temps will rise just slightly for a few days to place us in a place of false security and then last week of November 25th onwards moving into the first two weeks of December winter is well and truly with us with freezing cold conditions, freezing fog and snow showers from time to time that come to nothing to begin with in Southern parts but developing into major snow events throughout the UK.

Although most of the UK will be hit I feel parts of Southern England, South East and North East will be hit badly on several occasions. Travel chaos the big theme but for public transport mainly. Main roads will be clear for commuting and day to day business so we will be able to get out and about freely. Urban area main roads also being worked on by salting trucks. Just the smaller roads could be an issue but if everyone clubs in to clear then this will be ok.

School closures widespread throughout the winter period. Hard to define timings at this time as I’m seeing this throughout the winter months periodically, Dec, Jan, Feb. It’s a time to all help each other and even the government aiding the nation in some form. Wouldn't that be nice for a change

When I’m looking ahead of time, It’s the cold that is the big issue coming into my mind and not the snow! Please don’t get me wrong, the snow is a big issue but wow the cold!!! Snow events during December for most regions of the UK with bitter, icy blasts of wind from the North creating beautiful blue sky days in abundance.

Because of the cold the already fallen snow won’t be going anywhere and with more snow coming this is the major issue of thickening snow levels on the ground. Where in other winters, snow falls, melts and then more snow comes so it’s not so impacting as were only ever dealt with smaller amounts.

Snow arriving mid-December will create a white Christmas for many. When it does come down it will be very heavy and fast falling causing mayhem for some although much of this will be overnight. Just make sure you’re prepared as we move on through December into January.

January there’s no let up with further snow fall so just as we recover more will come I feel this will be worse than 2009/2010 snow events that caught everyone off guard last time. It will be a case of getting used to living this way for the period.

Again the big issue that comes through to me though is the extreme cold/wind chill factor created by winds coming in from the North. I can’t explain that fully now but just remember me saying it when you go outside. Get the big coats and jumpers at the ready. Electric blanket and hot chocolate time. 1946/1947 winter plays heavily in my mind but we'll just have to wait and see.

MY WINTER PREDICTION! SNOW? Putting my neck on the line here..!

As you will remember the UK widespread SNOW event that was to take place across the UK last winter never really happened and the bit we had didn't last long in the South. (I know the north had harsh conditions)

Well......My psychic weather prediction is -

December - January will experience some of the coldest and snowiest conditi
ons in at least 100 years with temperature records being broken. The winter will be much akin to 08/09 with the UK coming to a stand still. I also feel the government again are not ready for this and will be caught out again. We will get two major snow events during this time in the UK and I predict the whole of the UK will be hit by these events. I also predict the South East will be hit the worst compared to many other areas of the UK. I also feel aid from the military will be required in some areas of the UK. Powerouts and a drain on gas, electric could be an issue.

- Forecasters last night warned the entire country is set for a horror freeze which will bring brutal winds and fierce blizzards.

Temperatures have already started to plunge as a swathe of cold air from the Arctic has swept across the UK in the past few days.

The first long-range forecasts warn of "recordbreaking snowfall" next month.

Heavy wintry showers are expected to cause widespread chaos with below-average temperatures possibly lingering until February.

Have you tried making rosehip syrup? Super high in vitamin C and other vitamins in lesser amounts. It's a bit a of a pain because you have to strain the sharp hairs out which surround the seeds. Weight for weight they are one of the highest sources of vit C around. Plenty on the bushes right now.

I always go by the death count in the spring . On average 13000 coffin dodgers fail their saving throw vs cold in the UK for the last 10 years.
Spring 2014 predicting over 60000 frozen britsicles are found.

That's right almost 3 times more people freeze too death every single year , than died in an entire decade of gulf wars.
