Re: UK Winter preparedness & weather predictions 2013/14
No doubt about it - this year's temperatures are going to reach a record low! I don't read 'experts' - I look at the nature around me. Every year I've been right. Last year I couldn't pick a single blackberry, there just weren't any, and the rowan trees were bare. This meant an unusually mild winter, which it was. But this year! There are enough blackberries to open a fruit factory, and the rowan boughs are bent with the weight of berries. Means a damned big chill.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 39162401

I totally agree with ur theory...and yes, i had noticed that amount of berries compared to last year is much bigger
 Quoting: Nanna-Ree

Does this year's bumper berry crop mean we're in for a bleak winter? - [link to www.dailymail.co.uk]

Introduced by Chris Packham from Winterwatch who after it's shown asks how wildlife coped 50 years ago and if they would be able to cope if a similar winter happened in the future. From Saturday 19th January 2013 on BBC Two.

If you're caught short and can't get hold of any salt/grit I find that dishwasher salt works well and is usually a lot cheaper than the "specialist" ice-clearing salt sold in supermarkets.
With the added bonus that if you have any left, it can go in your dishwasher lol

Guys, take care. I've been using that "thermoplonjor" as it is called and besides that one a cup with double wall connected to 12V, as well. Both have been manufactured in China and both failed miserably after a while. One it almost melted the wire itself, the other, the cup has a problem to the jack which entered in the plastic base of the cup. Total unreliable and possible to start a fire. So if buy, don't buy cheap stuff!

On the same subject, I would suggest you to have a special bag, like a kit where to have:
- a Trangia alcohol stove, that comes with a mountable folding support
- a snow peak titanium pot, approx 1 liter
- a small plastic bottle with alcohol or denatured spirit (that sturdy plastic bottles they are using for polish nail, are very waterproof, so it will not spill around alcohol)
- minimum two small BIC cigarette lighters in some small sealable plastic bags
- a ziploc bag with some teabags and some sugar bags (before each winter season replace with fresh ones)
- if you are more inclined for such scenarios, more food stufs would not hurt anyone: some oatmeal, coffee or hot cocoa 3 in one pouches, can be added in that kit (but remember that these are more easily to be affected by staying in car longer time, just replace accordingly!)

So, if you are forced staying long time in car and being snowed somewhere on a highway, etc. you can take snow and melt, make it boil to kill all possible pathogens and then make a tea. You cannot believe how much difference will make to drink a hot cup of tea in that cold, give you some quick calories.

This also work also if you are thirsty. BEWARE: NEVER EAT DIRECTLY SNOW OR ICE! Just bring to boil in the cup then put the cup again in the snow for a while to cool down a bit, then drink it! Doing so, you will sterilize the water from the melted snow and will avoid also too much cooling down of your body, which is dangerous when very cold!

Besides the psychological effect, warmth, by using my method, you will spare also the car battery juice, because we all know that these days, they put small capacity and feeble batteries in modern cars, to save a buck and those electric heaters are drawing few good AMPS from the battery and with the outside cold you risk to not be able to start the engine again.

some random UK snow facts...

On 25 September 1895 snow was reported to have fallen at London and Wallington in Surrey making it the earliest fall of snow on the capital.

On 2 June 1975 snow showers forced the abandonment of several cricket matches across the country.

The snowiest winter of the twentieth century in the United Kingdom was 1947. Between 22 January and 17 March snow fell every day somewhere in the country.

Going to get the cavity wall insulation done before winter sets in. Last winter was long and bitter. Really ate away at me.

Look I would be wary to have in the car gas recipients under pressure, in case my car is violently hit it may explode. On the other hand, you can use some Coleman which could run of car gasoline (in case it has no lead in it!) but this stove is expensive. I search on Amazon UK it costs 85 GBP
[link to www.amazon.co.uk]

I also own an wood small efficient stove, [link to bushbuddy.ca]
which I paid more than 100 CAN for it, plus transport. But you need dry wood and you cannot burn in car.

Anyway I cannot imagine someone, blocked on the highway burning a lots of wood in a cheap rocket or hobo stove, made from a cut tin because maybe not legal allowed to use it on the highway road when you are forced to be stopped there and where you find dry wood there, when everything is snowed? And you don't want to have troubles with authorities, isn't it?

So the trangia stove is small, cost around 5 GBP and the fuel you can use medicinal/alimentary Alcohol >80 degrees it is very cheap, burns without smoke and nobody can detect it even you are burning inside your van, over a ceramic tile. So, it is a huge difference from a rocket stove made from a tin and forced to burn wood in a minus 10.. 15 outside!!!

And yes, you can disinfect with iodine, but is difficult to get exact the dose, the water has not a good taste and it is not killing the cryptosporidium (to be in the safe side you want to use micropur) which again costs money, it has a reduced shelf life and in the end YOU HAVE TO WAIT 30 minutes to be safe to drink (that the chemical has enough time to kill the germs).

And if there is only snow available, you need some fire, first to melt it, and in this winter case, we are again at the point where we started!

This is the reason I recommended this whole construction and because I want to have less number of things with me that each of them have multiple functionalities. I don't want to carry numerous fancy things and gadgets and when there is a problem I cannot find them or pieces for them to make it work, etc.

And to be convinced that no, I didn't recommend, not because I didn't know about that, but because the reasons mentioned above; please read my post in this thread, on the preparing subject:

I've been out foraging for rosehips to dry in my dehydrator and powder up ready for winter use. Collecting mushrooms, last of elderberries and wild apples.
Yep free food and medicine. Berries in freezer. Dehydrated horsetail, nettles,
and dandelion root for tea making. Mushrooms everywhere.

Weather suddenly colder and grey skies compared to the hot summer, plants
in garden confused strawberry plants are flowering again as other plants seem
to be dormant holding back on growth, its all messed up never had such a
weird year for growing food. The only food that has been reliable are
the wild edibles, berries and weeds because they are not sprayed with chemicals
and messed around with and have been consistent each year, local plants harmonising with the seasons.

Observing the abundance of berries this year I feel we are in for a cold winter.
Squirrels stripping acorns from trees for the winter.

Have birds migrated late or early this year?

Just to cheer you up, it's currently about 17 degrees here in New Zealand at about 7:25 am, and it's just gonna get warmer - and we're just hitting Spring. I think this Summer will be a scorcher.
