strange medical question (Bruising)
ok, im a relatively healthy 25 year old female. no history of blood vessels disorders, diabetes, cancer.. nothing of the sort.
i do however have an unspecified auto-immune disease.. which may or may not be Lupus.

i also rarely ever bruise, but for the past few months now, i have been getting a recurring bruise on my left arm, right on the area where the bone is, aligned with the wrist knuckle.
the bruise is usually pretty bad and can be as big as an inch or slightly more, very very dark too and sometimes hurts. its in the same *exact* spot each time.
but i swear to god i never bumped myself, i know i would remember that if i bumped myself that bad to have made a bruise this bad. its been so bad that a few people around me will even ask what happened and since its been going on a lot, i can only imagine what they are suspecting. its embarassing!

earlier today, i had absolutely no bruising, nothing. but a littkle while ago i was sitting here at the computer and had a bad itch around that area.. and it hurt for a sec and i looked down and see the damn bruise again. same spot but feels a little lump under the surface.

what the heck is this thing? i certainly didnt bump myself. and theres no other disturbance in the surrounding skin or arm.

again, its located between the wrist knuckle and the bottom portion of my lower arm.

its starting to freak me out now.
i am a student at a medical tech school nd asked a few others there on what they thought and they had no clue either.
one person though, asked me if i had bruising nayhwree else like that or have bene bruising easily as of late, because that could be a sign of something more serious..

but i really have to say, that i am sort of brusiing a little easier than before. normally it would take ALOT for me to bruise..

also, im on no medications that could cause this either.

any ideas?

If you are bruising more frequently now, it could be that you lack Vitamin C. Your capillaries are weakening. This generally happens to older women.

Grape seed extract or Pycnogonol (even better) would serve to strengthen your entire vascular system. Proven, and in a short period of time...30 days.

It could also be a foreign object being 'worked' out by your body. A splinter.. a tiny piece of glass.. gravel from when you fell down in the driveway at age 4.

Just a possibility.

Bioflavinoids are good for bruising. Could it be the movement of the wrist joint itself that's causing this..like bruising from the inside out?

I've had similar occurrences for the past few years. My bruise is always located in the same spot on my upper left arm and is a small bruised spot, slightly raised and ringed by another bruise. The whole thing is never more than 1cm across.

As with the original poster there's never any impact or trauma to the area. It just appears, hangs around, then fades. No unusual bruising to any other areas, or really much bruising of any kind in spite of a reasonably active lifestyle.

I've spoken to my Doctor about it but he has no clue, any thoughts?

Re: strange medical question (Bruising)
If you have Rheumatoid Arthritis, then you could have a rheumatoid nodule growing there. Rheumatoid nodules tend to show up where there is little fat/muscle between the skin and the bone. I have had a few on the tops of my feet growing along the side of the ligament of the little toe. I would get a nasty bump and the area was bruised, I would have itching and pain. Mind the bruising was caused from wearing my shoes. more on that below.

Also, think back carefully, has this spot been itching a lot now that you think of it?

If so, it is most likely your scratching at it that is causing bruising. It does happen, and a dermatologist will prescribe prescription strength topical ointment to stop the itching on the skin and will, if it is assumed a histamine reaction, also give you antihistamines of prescription strength.

If however it is the other way around, you have a bruise that itches, then I would strongly suggest that you go to a next day office visit and have the doctor look at it and run a few tests.

Blood work-up including a CBC, a liver panel and a few others, and a Complete Urinalysis to test for minerals and some other things.

S/he will have to rule out infection and allergies and a skin condition before moving on to a physical - INSIDE the skin issue.

If this is an area of an old injury, it could be a bit of debris in there. If you ever cracked or broke the bone it could be a bone splinter working its way out, or it could be a bone spur (if you have arthritis anywhere else in your body, then the chances are pretty high for this one) that has broken off, or is just now starting to grow.

Now Rheumatoid arthritis affects a lot more than just joints. Its early stages it can present as a simple 'sore spot' or a lump or even an organ problem.

RA is also an autoimmune disorder. [link to www.medicinenet.com]

and [link to www.nlm.nih.gov] which has a complete set of symptoms, including other early signs and symptoms.

Since you are young it is possible you are just now developing RA.

And bruising is often typical of RA:

There is a specific test called the Rheumatoid Factor. [link to www.healthline.com]

I'm willing to bet your doctor hasn't tested you for it.

Having a very similar problem on the inside of my right forearm, right next to a big vein I have. Seems to bruise more the more I work out, but haven't pinpointed a specific exercise, push-ups don't really do it, maybe pull ups/Muscle ups. but there is no impact trauma to the area. 22 year old male, relatively healthy.

Re: strange medical question (Bruising)
I don't use allopathic medicine as my primary model.

However, what you are describing sounds to me like perhaps either an RA type issue, or some type of inflammatory response going on in your blood. Purpura can cause the bruising, or pooling of blood. The itching could indicate that the nerves are being influenced by the inflammatory response. Some blood tests sound like they may be a good idea.

From an alternative perspective, the other posters rec's for Vitamin C, and other such things. Anything that can aid in reducing the overall inflammation in your system will help.

As an aside, have you ever been tested for dietary allergies..perhaps gluten?

Can you access a doctor of homeopathy where you are?

Good luck, take care.

Re: strange medical question (Bruising)
Serious questions for you OP.

Are you, or any of your siblings, double jointed anywhere on the body?

Do you have scoliosis?

Do you have an astigmatism?

Have you ever been told you have a problem with the connective tissue in your body?

Does your skin seem overly stretchy?

Do you have allergies?

Do you need extra novacaine for dental procedures or does it wear off quickly?

Do you have unexplained problems with your gums, or weird cavities such as appearing smaller until drilled out?

Do you have minor, yet chronic health problems that are unexplained?

Do your problems effect one side of your body and not the other?

Do you have any skin problems, like dermatitis, rashes around your nose, eyebrows, chin? Do you have bouts of dandruff?

Not likely she'll return but just in case for the original asker: what did it end up being? I have the exact same bruise in the exact same location, except there's no itching or pain. I noticed it a few months back but otherwise don't have any other issues. It can't be a vitamin C deficiency because I've been taking that supplment for over three years now, the bruising just started about 6 months or so ago.

I hope you were able to find a solution and are willing to share! best wishes either way!

Critically dangerous level of anemia, especially if you are arthritic. The bruise areas can quickly develop into massive open sores.

Like it did for one of my daughters.

Re: strange medical question (Bruising)
a high platelet count can cause clots to form. If the clot forms close to the skin, blood can pool before it and cause what appears to be a bruise. It can become a dangerous situation if left untreated.

If you already know you have an immune issue then you have probably had a full blood work up. Check you numbers, see if your platelets are elevated even slightly. Some times what appears to be a small amount of elevation can be too much for an individual.

smoking and the pill can cause platelet counts to rise.

I say, see a doctor.

Re: strange medical question (Bruising)
Yes By all means see a doctor.

I had the same problem with an auto immune condition

After testing it was discovered that my platelet count was dangerously low.

They wanted to do a transfusion but I declined.

Strengthen your immune system and the platelet count will return to normal like mine did.

In the meantime, my doctor told me to be careful even when sleeping as even a small cut could cause me to bleed out while i was sleeping.......
