The central fault is locked.. with the action at each end. These are shallow quakes.. so they are felt quite strongly even tho they are not so "big". |

Himmmm..... heads up.... Good. Need some doom. |

(OP) User ID: 44046893 New Zealand 07/26/2013 05:34 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have never seen the quake drum there with so much red on it. And there appears to be a "glow" from a spot in the crater which shows on the night pictures. A hot spot? Never seen that before either. I can see White Is. from a hill behind my property.. so if it goes off I will have a grandstand view. |

They seem to be more intense today..ie bigger. The nearest onshore drum..Urewera.. is also showing lots of low magnitude activity. This is what I would expect to see if something was brewing. Time will tell. In the worst case scenario I think people should have a plan to live in a tent ( or a caravan or RV would be OK), something that can't hurt if it collapses on you. And of course all the equipment for cooking and lighting outdoors with power and water cut off. No reason to panic now.. but this is an ideal prep for the long term. There will always be a risk of earthquake or volcano in NZ. |

I will be interested to see how this develops. Still a string of aftershocks around Seddon in the South Island from the big "Wellington" quake. |

Those of you who leap about screaming Yellowstone should take a step back and look at the large number of calderas down there... Hatobaro, Kapenga, Maroa, Mangakino, Repora, Rotura, Taupo, Whackamaru. Whackamaru is about 33 x 38 km and is probably the parent that Taupo came from. When Taupo last went up, it showed no zonation in it's eruption. That means that it was well mixed magma and went up as one event. Usually, the eruptions exhibit zonation as each chemical layer get picked up in the eruption. Whackamaru showed zonation. And White Island is in a very similar geologic setting. Somewhere in this region, a seamount exploded a year or so ago and made a monstrous pumice raft. Some have speculated that had it been above water, it would have been a VEI5 or 6. With White Island... all bets are off. Everything under the Sun is in tune, but the Sun is eclipsed by the Moon. |

(OP) User ID: 44204789 New Zealand 07/28/2013 07:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | [link to www.stuff.co.nz] As reported here earlier another big shake.. closer to Seddon than Wellington. Seddon is a small town .. but is getting rattled like crazy. A lot of minor damage is done .. like to old chimney stacks in older houses. Brick and concrete... these are expensive to fix and are mostly being removed.. also expensive. So even minor damage can leave you with a big bill. White Island seems stable.. but is still throwing an impressive steam cloud. Seems to me we are in a period of increased activity... stay prepared/alert. |
