Most people don't understand that in many states you can be fired for ANY reason that is not tied to a federally protected class.

One day your boss could say, " you're fired" and you say "why" ? and he or she says, " I just want you out of here, no particular reason", and yes it IS legal.

Barring a signed contract, it is also legal for you to quit your job with no notice.

You could have been "working" on a major report for the last two months ( actually NOT working on it ), and the day it is due, your boss says, " I need that report NOW", you can answer, " um I decided NOT to do it - I quit, A-hole".

The employer has NO recourse , other than I wouldn't use them for a reference.

You would think we were living under the law of Islam.
