Anonymous Coward User ID: 41596561 United States 07/02/2013 12:16 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Too little, too late. I've been a Windows user for 25 years, but Apple is doing it right by the slow merging of OS X and iOS. Microsoft, behind in the mobile space, went for the fences with an "adapt or die" policy, and the users spoke up. Windows 7 is the best version Microsoft ever shipped, and instead of gentle refinements on a stable OS, it couldn't help but try to be the radical one a la Apple, and is suffering for it. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 15739369 Australia 07/02/2013 12:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I'm running an ASUS laptop which came with Win 8 and standard. Metro pissed me off huge-time since I don't have a touch screen laptop and metro is kinda useless without one, so I pulled the HDD and reformatted it so I could upgrade to the warm, loving and ever so familiar Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit. Since the frickin' computer was designed to run Win 8, Win 7 was all buggy and kept on getting worse until finally I was presented with a blue screen of death ever single time I went to use the thing. That pissed me off since I'd have to go back windows * and then I'd end up all sad and sulky about metro and either put an axe through the laptop or else take it back whence it came for a refund. On my Nexus 7 tablet I googled ways to get rid of Metro and give me a start button back. Most of the sites and YT vids said wait for 8.1 because all the problems would be fixed. I lack patience so I googled some more and discovered various bits of software I could use to banish metro to the dark hole it belongs as well as add a start button. The one I finally went with is the one described in this vid: I haven't had a problem with it in the two months its been installed. Classic shell is good too. Microsoft are deadset fuckwits. Do they expect corporate and government users (not to mention creatives such as myself) to put up with having all these touch screen apps on their workstations? Hopefully the word will get around and volume users will refrain from upgrading to Win 8. That's when Microsoft will finally release Windows 8.7 which gives the user or network admin the choice of whether to install the metro bullshit or not. It's a pretty simple thing, but MS is so very focused on charging people money for access to cloud apps that they can't see the forest for the trees. |

It's HORRIBLE. BLOATED, AWFUL! Screens pop-up when you don't want them to, pain in the ass to get back to the 'desktop', they put all the mega-monopoly corporations right inside the fucking system (Amazon, Netflix, etc whatever...) trying to goad you into signing up for their shitting services. No Start Menu or Toolbars. No drivers for half my external devices. No-one even makes software or drivers for this shit, so why the fuck would I use it? It's a nightmare. I'll stick to a Win7/Linux dual boot. SCREW WINDOWS 8 & BILL GATES EUGENICIST ASS! |

Not too excited with "classic shell"... I FUCKING HATE METRO. So I install the update located here.... [link to windows.microsoft.com] I even uninstalled 'classic shell" so there would be no conflict with the new start button and guess what? The new start button takes you to METRO. WTF Microsoft? So this morning I'm deleting this crap and going back to windows 7. This is below is so accurate.... [link to art.penny-arcade.com] Windows 7!!!!!!!!!! Anonymous Coward User ID: 4025583 United States 07/03/2013 12:32 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have had a horrible thought. It seems everyone is pushing for lightweight OS's for tablets, phones, and such and to do so means leaving all of your data in the 'cloud'. So, a theory is, tptb are pushing for these OS's because they want everyone's data in the 'cloud' so it is easier to snoop. What we need today, is software developers to design good linux based software that mirrors what everyone is used to and wants. That way everyone, business and creative, can say 'screw you' to all these overpriced screwed up OS's and go to linux and more functional software. But, the software availability is the issue. Especially for large businesses. Also, IMHO, since ms has dumped support of all users of anything except 8, someone needs to come in and declare that if it is not supported = it is automatically public domain. Making, XP and 7 free. That would make ms scramble. Computer users (desktop) need to stand up and say NO MORE to the constant forced upgrades by the industry. I, for one, will continue to use my XP and 7 machines ad infinitum. Unfortunately, I am in the minority because I actually can hack my own machines to make them run and keep them safe. |

Now that I found Linux I want to try them ALL! And since they are free and can run from live usb, I think I will. |

It is my fear that the days of pirating expensive software are almost over, with Microsoft, Adobe and even Avid abandoning them in the near future to make way for subscription-only applications. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 14703874 United States 07/03/2013 12:52 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My ASUS lap top came with windows 8 and Metro Bites ! Especially the explorer browser on the metro screen. But, ASUS had Preinstalled a classic view which is just like using Windows XP and explorer browser works better from this classic desktop over the other. When shopping for it, I read hundreds of reviews on how they all hated 8 but it was the ASUS users that had the classic view or downloaded the classic view patch that enjoyed their product. The laptop is blazing fast, has no hang ups enough ram and processor to future proof it awhile. Has a killer graphics card, can game awesome if, Here is the if.... If the game is compatible. You have to go through a lot of shit to get previous software to work, one being gears of war, yeah, go figure. But other than that, the thing is badass and got it new for a supergood price. |

Love Me some Linux Mint 14! I want to try fedora Schrödinger's cat If you are not familiar with Linux, I wouldn't start off w/ Fedora. It's a great OS but adheres to strictly to FOSS. You may have to do some extra work enabling 3rd party repositories for proprietary software to install things like mp3, flash, and some wifi drivers. It's not too hard to do, but some newbies find it defeating that "everything" doesn't work right out of the box. Distros like Mint, Mageia, Ubuntu, PCLOS, etc.. have non-foss software included and "everything" is up and running 20 min after you start the install. Long Live The Penguin! |
