Generation X Fares Poorly During Recession, Says Study
Members of Generation X, the so-called slackers weaned on Saturday morning cartoons, divorce and cynicism, are now in their late 30s to late 40s. And according to a recent report, they really do have something to complain about.

A Pew Charitable Trust study, titled "Retirement Security Across Generations," examined the savings behavior of five age groups before the Great Recession hit and found that Gen Xers - the group of Americans following the baby boomers that range in age from 38 to 47 - fared especially poorly during the recent economic down swing. As a result, their retirement years will likely be more tarnished than golden.

The study, using data from 1989 through 2010 collected by the Federal Reserve Board and the University of Michigan, found that between 2007 and 2010, Gen Xers-which the report defined as those born between 1966 and 1975-lost nearly half of their overall net worth, an average of about $33,000, and also had higher levels of debt than previous generations.

A large part of the reason their debt is so high is because of student loans and credit card debt, Erin Currier, who directs Pew's economic mobility project, told ABC News. "They're younger in their professional career relative to other cohorts," she said. "Wealth is a mixture of all kinds of things - savings, personal accounts, investments."

What's more, although Gen-Xers (who earned their moniker from Douglas Coupland's 1991 novel, " Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture"), did see high financial gains as a result of the housing boom, their overall rate of home ownership is lower than that of previous generations.

Credit card debt? STOP GOING OVERBOARD WITH CREDIT CARDS. Most people sustain their 'lifestyles' through debt. Most people in Gen X generation and today's young generation have, to be brutally honest, grown up spoiled and entitled. Not just in the U.S., but in every other post industrial first world country. They don't want to get their hands dirty. They look down on anything that's non 'professional' white collar. They all want to live the lives they see portrayed in TV and movies of hip, cool young people living in the city, with their hip jobs, and hip lifestyle.

I've taken it on myself to ignore the media hype and spin on our generational abilities.

I'm going to do my own thing and ignore the offered 'solutions'...just like the late 80's and early 90's. Been broke with no debt most of my life.

I can now state that being broke isn't my challenge. My challenge is how to stop being so awesome and so strong in difficult situations like now.

Difference between the late 80's-90's and now. Today 1/3rd of the work force is retired, there are no more places on this planet to export inflation and we...the collective we of every generation will watch it all burn once and for all.

Then we can get on with our lives and build something everyone can use on a community basis.

Re: Generation X Fares Poorly During Recession, Says Study
I can see that. They are the group which has young children at home - or kids in college. Their expenses are huge during those years with the cars for the kids, insurance, piano lessons, football gear, college expenses, etc.

They came into the housing market when homes were at all-time highs and put down $20K for a down payment but promptly lost it all and ended upside down on their mortgages.

This is the first generation where almost all of the women work as well as the man, so when one of them lost his/her job, their financial situation deteriorated quickly.

I'm a tail-end Boomer and I've seen that we didn't have it as good as our older siblings. The Xers have it even worse than us.

a generation is 20-25 years, depending on who's counting.

Attempts will be made to save those that want to save themselves. But yes, mostly we'll mourn for the loss. Crying doesn't make it better, nor does wishing it so.

To make it better, we have to work at it without the retarded ideas we've been hamstrung by for 120 years.

There are far too few of us to make that change now. If one thing that will bind people after the fact it's a communial sadness, that memory...the pain this has all caused and will cause until it's done. That will bind. There will be nobody left without loss, and not one standing without a respect for the tenious nature of life.

And how hate is such a worthless energy sink. Any attempt to repair this now is only throwing good energy after a bad idea that is choking us to death slowly in every aspect of society. After it settles down, we'll all be in the proper mindset to rise from the ashes and focus on what our goals are as a speices. Not war. Religion. Colour. Politics. None of it, it's all worthless garbage built to act like an albatross around our necks.

So be poor, debt free and well studied. Live a good clean life and believe me, my world doesn't change. My expectations were never that high in my material needs, so living on a shoestring has never changed for me over decades of living that way.

I would assume some of my cohort are in the same boat. We've never been an exceptionally successful generation financially. Our parents kept a firm grip on that, but instead of anger towards it, I see sadness. My parents require certain things to have their lives 'normal', I do not.

Memories are short how bad it was for nearly a decade. Getting a job at McDonalds was tricky business. Most of us decided to work for ourselves (and still do) without government assistance.

Our younger generational friends are in the same boat as our parents. They were born into 'good times'. The optics are different, they've never known a life without something they wanted. Imagine what would happen once a cell phone is out of reach price wise.

Shit...I didn't get a cell phone until it was cheaper than a landline, even then, no data services (it's a hidden vampire cost). Anycase. Want to learn how to live in this, think back to your younger years as gen X.

Re: Generation X Fares Poorly During Recession, Says Study
The people of Gen-X have been poorly served and poorly prepared for survival. The schools failed to teach them thinking and analytical skills. Society set an example of giving handouts. Very few learned to write by hand, to string a well constructed sentence together or to order thoughts into a logical sequence. Many learned that to get what they wanted, they only had to have a tantrum. The skills and drive to deal with basic infrastructure issues has not been passed on, and so we can look forward to a crumbling of road, bridges and buildings. This generation grew up with an assured food supply and do not know there was a time not filled with ever changing electronic gadgets and devices.

You're so full of shit.

You're blaming your lack of financial success on your parents holding you back? They fucking pampered your worthless asses with Xboxes, iPods, Computers, cell phones, iPads, etc. We had NONE of that. I never even knew what software was until I worked my way through college.

We weren't born into good times. We were born into the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Jimmy Carter's "malaise" and "misery index" along with 20% interest rates and double-digit unemployment and double-digit inflation. Don't give me your "my parents had it easy and then kept me down" bullshit. Grow the fuck up.

If the cell phone was out of reach, parents would do fine - we never had that shit until recently. It's YOU that grew up texting and sexting.
