Your choices for an all around survival knife
So I'd like to start a discussion for those out there who aren't knife people and have no idea where to start with adding knives to their prep supplies.

As any knife person will tell you, there is no "ONE" knife for every job. Some are more suited for camp chores, some are good for chopping, some are great for bushcraft or cleaning game. A small knife wont do everything, but a large knife paired with a smaller knife can accomplish much of what you would need in a survival, camping, situation.

I'd like to throw out some suggestions for larger knives, great for chopping, batoning, all around camp chores ect.

paired with a Mora for small work, these will serve you well.

I'd love to hear suggestions for other knives.

For Christmas my kids got me a Black label tactical knife [link to www.google.com (secure)]

By far the best and strongest blade I've ever used...I have always carried a knife and have to constantly sharpen them, but this thing holds a razor sharp edge like I've never seen.

Case makes good knives but the old skinner I inherited from Dad has the best steel. Sharpens to a razor-fine, long-lasting edge.
Solingen steel. Made in the fifties.
I've dressed and sinned a lot of game with it... from moose to bear to deer to rabbit.
It's like a sore peter... you can't beat it.

It's a tad bit brittle... needs to be for the edge.
You don't want to hammer or pry with.

Hence the multi-tool.

I used to just carry the free pock knives that I'd get from suppliers, and I use a knife most every day for one reason or another...stripping wire for my solar stuff or just opening mail, which dulls a blade fast, but this thing is hardened I guess...I'm quite impressed...I'm afraid to find out what they paid for it.

I agree, I just refinished a Cold Steel pipehawk. stripped that ugly black paint off, polished it, stained the handle and wrapped with paracord. Looks like a $100 hawk now.

I like multitools for my car. Too bulky to carry every day, IMO

Couple of reasons why I dont really like SAK's. Most of the blades dont lock, the one above does, and the blades arent big enough for most jobs.
