GLP'ers and Prison: Share Any Tips, Advice & Experiences Here!
I'm at a crossroads in my life. I've been 'laying low' in an attempts to save up money to get a decent lawyer to fight this charge, since my court appointed one didn't really do much to help. However, it's very very difficult to find a job when you're 'wanted' and even though my charge isn't violent or sex-related I'm pretty much screwed if someone runs a background check on me. I've run myself into a corner with nowhere to go now. I want to fix this mess I've created for myself but I'm pretty much chicken shit and I'm terrified of going to prison. Still, I'm in my own hellish prison already by choosing to live in fear on the run. I guess the reason I'm making this post is I'm hoping that there are some of you who have had the misfortune of serving prison time who might be able to offer some words of encouragement or advice on how to deal with it.

Save up every dime and get a good lawyer.

Do everything you can to avoid prison, do not put your life into the hands of another human.

The money can be paid off.

Your time, dignity and physical, mental and spiritual safety can never be gotten back.

Research the hell outta the Internet. Look for the best lawyers you can find. Call the ones that offer free phone consults. Trust that the right one will come to you. Which will happen when you take complete control and responsibility for your situation.

Judges do not care about justice. Most are corrupt and take financial kickbacks for every person they send to prison.

I hope the best for you OP. I happen to know someone in prison for a victimless crime. This country and its "justice" department are screwed.

Your other option would be just to leave this shit-hole country and make a new life for yourself somewhere else.

A little money can go a long way in most countries.

I was in a very bad frame of mind and I attempted to steal something from a department store. I didn't have a weapon and I didn't hurt anyone. The thing is in the State of Texas if you RUN from loss prevention (even without the merchandise you are attempting to take) they can trump up a simple "Attempted Theft Under $500" to a "Unarmed Robbery" which is a 2nd Degree Felony. I originally received probation for the charge but there were way too many hoops to jump through, classes to take and fees to pay and I couldn't keep my head above water so I panicked and stopped showing up. At the absolute worst case scenario I'd be looking at 2-5yrs in State Prison.

See, this is what I'd like to do. The problem is the only family I have that I can stay with live in a very, very, VERY small rural community. I've been "hiding out" so to speak for months now but there's just no work to be found here. I have a guaranteed job with my Grandfather doing handyman and maintenance work if I move but the problem is I wouldn't have anywhere to stay and I couldn't go to a homeless shelter because I'm pretty sure they would do a background check. All in all it's really not that bad if I stay where I am at except it's going to be me, my aunt, mother and 10yr old little brother all cramped in a very small trailer. I wish I could find work where I live now so I could save. Thank you very much for your advice, AC. I appreciate it.

Thank you for the book suggestions. They look interesting. It might be worth it to purchase these before I make my decision. I mean I really like Choice B but then again I don't know where I would go or even how I would get there. Might be time to re-read that "100 Ways To Disappear And Live Free" booklet.

I understand where you're coming from, Brief. Not to justify my actions, because they warrant no justification whatsoever, still I wasn't trying to steal or rob from an individual. Also I'm not a 'career criminal' nor am I someone who would steal all the time. It was a horribly stupid mistake that I made and I'm paying dearly for it and will probably be paying even more dearly in the days to come. I wish it was as simple as losing a hand. I'd let you chop it off if it meant not having to risk going to prison. I'm not a thief by nature though but I respect your opinion and like I said I don't blame you at all for feeling that way.

If you are going to have a lot of time to yourself, READ BOOKS to expand your awareness & MEDITATE! Use your time wisely. Don't fester on negative emotions and feeling sorry about your circumstances - that will only bring your down. Try and be as constructive as possible. You can come out of there a completely different person than the one who went in....

This is what I was planning on if and when I have to go serve my time. Honestly, the only thing that scares me about prison is the other inmates and the violence. I'm definitely NOT a fighter but I think if I am going to serve my time I should start working out now and maybe learn some hand to hand combat or street fighting skills to defend myself.

Yeah definitely don't take someone up on that. I also heard that some people might try to offer you commissary items like soups or whatever and if you take it that's like placing yourself in debt with that person.

Okay I didn't read your other posts before I left my reply. I just read your circumstances. I would not get too far ahead of yourself in terms of expecting the maximum statutory penalty to be handed out. It's very costly to incarcerate individuals and when you're dealing with non-violent crimes/offenders for lower class felonies, it's not always an attractive option.

What I'm saying is, it may not be in the best interest of the state/municipality to throw the book at you when house arrest, or a much shorter stint in jail is far less costly and thus a more attractive option. If you do have to serve time just keep to yourself and mind your own business and I'm sure things will not be as bad as the commonly accepted stereotypes might make one want to believe.

I wish I could find work where I live now so I could save. Thank you very much for your advice, AC. I appreciate it.

Get on the phone and call lawyers ASAP. The longer you wait to take care of this, the harder it will be to deal with later.

You need to decide what your goals are before you decide which path to take.

You might be able to find someplace to crash for a few months while you work with your grandfather.

You might be able to find a small trailer that you can stay in while you live on your parents property. (Craig's list is amazing for stuff like that)

You might be able to find a homeless shelter that can help get you set up somewhere. (Never heard of shelters doing background checks). But call around and see what they're policies and programs are.

You might find a lawyer that is doing pro bono work. (Yeah, right! Lol)

You might get a referral to an organization that helps people with legal matters, etc. there are tons of programs out there. But you gotta look around.

I'm not trying to sound patronizing. I'm sure you've researched some of these things already. Just hoping a little bit of support will make a difference for you.

Hugs

Re: GLP'ers and Prison: Share Any Tips, Advice & Experiences Here!

Wow, you were given a chance with probation, and you fucked that up. You dont deserve another chance. Turn yourself in and do your time, scumbag.

I didn't fuck it up intentionally, asshole. I couldn't afford it.

If you do get sent to the "Big House", make sure you immediately hook up with the gang that suits your ethnicity.

You'll probably have to get lots of horrible tattoos, but at least you'll be protected, to an extent.

The worst part of it all is that I'm half hispanic and half white, can't speak a lick of spanish to save my life and I have a spanish last name. So the mexican gangs won't want me and the white gangs won't either.

LOL! I'm screwed.
