yes we are, you observation is completely spot on.

Yesterday I commenced this thread and it understandably went balistic.

I trust my sources but to date we still have no real concrete information on the reports of the American cases, apparently in St Lukes hospital in New York.

If the accounts are correct that these cases are almost a month old and really have been well concealed, leading to the point that we have quite an information barrier to break through.

Experience has taught me that usually one will get a sniff of information then things will go quiet for a few days before the walls fall and the real revelations become apparent.

Today, I scraped through all my usual sources hoping to se some hint that related to the tip I had received...nothing.

So I have today just decided to wait for a day or two and to see what might emerge in the near future.

In the mean time, there have been more reports of the Saudis releasing further information on new cases of MERS-cov as I predicted that they would due to their media blackout and the increase in cases that they cant hide for too long.

At this point in time I think that this is a waiting game, and more information will flow sometime in the near future.

Its either that or my sources were really scammed which would be very unusual indeed, in fact a first.

So we wait.

Thanks for taking the time to post here.
While I am glad we are not dealing with a nCoV outbreak, the fact that the hospital is dealing with a nasty influenza B that doesn't respond to tamiflu is concerning. Particularly as staff were asked to keep quiet about it. With nCoV, H7N9 and H5N1 rumbling around, keeping quiet about any outbreak undermines confidence.

At this point in time it appears that the cases that were being so carefully veiled with secrecy look as though they were Influenza B cases.

Influenza B is not as common as the Influenza A types but is treatable and treatment is usually effective.

Exactly why the authorities would choose to apply such strict pressure on information remains unclear.

Also, this is excellent news if in fact it is correct, however there remains other news that may be just as frightening.

There has been the suggestion that the four other people in France who were initially described to have contracted MERS-cov from the confirmed positive case and who eventually tested negative that their tests may have been false negatives and their cases mild.

Four other contacts were symptomatic and tested negative, but false negatives are common, especially if the samples tested were from the upper respiratory from cases with mild symptoms.

In Saudi Arabia where we have seen the steady release new cases of MERS-cov, the continuing suppression of information continues.

And with that information blackout the real picture and comprehendion of the real threat simply cannot be gauged.

All we know is that all the original cases have been exported from Saudi Arabia, but contrary to WHO assertions there have been several clusters where casual contact has been responsible for the further spread of this MERS-cov.

This fatality was followed by reports of 5 hospitalized cases at her school with SARS-like synptoms, as well as a non-disclosure requirement that prohibited release of the names, ages, and location of the school, although a tweet has cited cases at a school in Al Hofuf (Abu Abeida), which may be the school cited above or an additional school.

Again the admission of more cases of MERS in new information being released from Saudi Arabia.

These new cases are apparently medical attending staff of infected cases, again signalling H2H transmission of MERS-cov.

The numbers being cited in this article should be of serious concern to all.

There is nowhere near enough information available for us to even guess at what the real state might be with the advance of MERS-cov towards becoming a pandemic, but these sorts of numbers even if only those being tested as precautionary measures, gives no reason to feel that we can lower our guards on this.

The sheer numbers being mentioned, if nothing else at least demonstrate the extent of the "contact train" of positive cases and should this MERS-cov evolve just slightly to become more aggressively H2H transmissible then those same numbers could well be describing new cases instead of close contacts as is the current case.

This matter is far from being resolved and with the complications that the Saudi authorities are generating with censoring critical information and probably other transparency issues it is inevitable that this MERS-cov will at some point go pandemic, how can it not?

Recent media reports also noted that 560 suspect cases had been tested in May and 30 recent cases were still being reviewed. Moreover, the two MERS-CoV confirmed health care practitioners have been described as Aramco technicians running MERS-CoV PCR tests in Dhahran (see map), although some reports say they were doctor and nurse who were exposed to infected patients.

The large number of confirmed and suspect cases raise concerns that the reporting of the younger cases is being delayed or withheld due to concerns of alarm or false negatives, which are common especially if testing is not done on samples from the lower respiratory tract.

More detail on reasons why the fatal cases have not been reported would be useful.


Moreover, the absence of any confirmed cases following the six cases reported two days ago raises additional transparency concerns.

An extract from the linked article states what the WHO is currently admitting to, as confirmed MERS-cov figures up to date.

From September 2012 to date [15 May 2013], WHO has been informed of a global total of 40 laboratory confirmed cases of human infection with nCoV, including 20 deaths from 6 countries (France, Germany, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom).
