My Name is Lisa and I work for St Luke's in New York. As a nurse I don't feel right keeping information from the public regarding a possible outbreak. I have worked at St Luke's for 5 years working in the Emergency Room and Pediatric Floor. We have seen 25 confirmed cases of SARS. The nurses who have been treating these patients have been told to keep quiet. The CDC has been contacted and have been at the hospital but on a day that I was off. So I do not know the outcome of their visit. The SARS Symptoms are as follows. Sars symptoms are just like the flu but last longer then a week. Fever can be 100.4 or higher aches and pains Diarrhea dry cough and trouble breathing . The unknown flu we have been treating symptoms are as follows, Fever over 103 Severe body aches and pains Raspy Cough Chills Either a Fast or slow heart rate. Lethargic. As any nurse will tell you Yes Antibiotics are not useful in a Viral case. After necessary cultures are obtained it is not unusual for doctors to prescribe antibiotics especially in an acute situation. Any adult presenting with a fever of 103 causes worry. The Antibiotics prevent secondary bacterial infections from happening including Bronchitis and pneumonia. The nurses who have spoken up and asked questions have not returned to work. As I am writing this I am in a hospital after being admitted with a Flu like virus. |

Keep us posted on your illness, hope it's nothing serious, but why did you go to the hospital, since you know what needs to be done for a typical flu? Or do you think you've contracted something more serious? |

Well pregnancy definitely calls for safety. tell your aunt to go get you some oil of oregano capsules, vitamin d and vitamin c. The Oil works well for many things...viruses, bacteria, fungal. Better than tamiflu and natural, but oh yeah, you are pregnant, not sure on the oil, i'll check on that. |

It is superb for non-pregnancy people. |

One thing I've seen people say time and time again is putting a cut onion next to your bed. I know it sounds crazy, but there are people who swear it's the only thing that their grandparents or great grandparents say saved them from the 1918 spanish influenza. The virus supposedly gets lured to the onion like a moth to a flame. Try it if you can. |

Well Lisa hang in there. You're gonna get a lot of crazy advice from this website, but a lot of it is tried and true. You should try anything and everything, especially for the health of you and your baby. Sucks the crap out through the pores of your feet. Heard it works on the serious lung infection stuff. |

Around minute 4. He starts talking about "what he's been told" - how we have an "antibiotic resistant flu virus." He got that from a "very reliable source" - a "skilled, well-knowledgeable nurse". I can't take shit like this seriously when it's so blatantly wrong about details that should be obvious. Confused. Antibiotics treat bacterial infections like strep and staph, not viral infections. This comment is illogical. |

WEll my head is really spinning. First I commence this thread with news of A SARS like coronavirus that has appeared in a New York hospital where a number of cases are being treated but their condition is being heavily conceiled by authorities. Some time later I hear that all these cases apparently have Influenza B, but the secrecy surrounding these cases is baffling as it simply isnt warranted. Counter-rumors? Now a nurse who actually works at St Lukes comes forward to tell us that the original reports were indeed accurate, which again would explain the attempt to veil these cases. I am very inclined to believe Lisa's account. And Lisa, if you read this, please let me offer you all of my personal very best wishes for the health of both yourself and the child that you are carrying. I truely do hope that you are able to see a very speedy and complete recovery and that your current condition causes you no suffering, but please ensure that you get the very best care and the most complete attention that you possibly can. And when you have recovered I would genuinely like to hear about that too as I am certain all those of here will also be very keen to hear of as well. Our wishes for all the very best for you Im sure I can extend on everyones behalf. Your posts here are very welcome and the news that you have confirmed is highly regarded, and very much apreciated. Thank you arkay |

When there is a case of anything like SARS or MERS-cov that has been detected that case is reportable to the World Health Organization and the CDC, if it is America. If these 25 cases in St Lukes are either of these and if reports are correct that they in fact have been undergoing treatment since late April. And as "Lisa" has also reported that the CDC has indeed been in attendance, then why is it that we have not yet seen any official or formal reports of these cases after all this time. Next... Though SARS has so far been what is being suggested at St Lukes, I remain completely unconvinced that these cases will be SARS. There has been absolutely no talk or reports of SARS, well for well over a year, however the MERS-cov that has emerged from Saudi Arabia has been very prominent news, especially over the last month or so. I would expect these American cases if they are in fact a coronavirus to be MERS-cov. What is very concerning is the fact that we may have a significant single cluster that has emerged in the US, which almost certainly would signal efficient H2H transmission. It would be of very great assistance to be able to hear if any of the St Lukes cases have a recent history of travel to Saudi Arabia. Whether that information ever comes to light doesent change one very important fact. People whose religous faith requires them to make a pilgrimage to Mecca to observe the Hajj or Umrah should be strenously discouraged from doing so for a short period until the MERS-cov in Saudi Arabia has been resolved which very unfortunately at this point in time appears to remain a long way off. As yet even the reservour hasnt been identified and this coronavirus has been found to infect people from the Eastern to the Western boundaries of Saudi Arabia, and all the way up the Arabian peninsuiar to Jordan where it initially emerged in April 2012. Traditionally Muslims travel to Mecca in the millions each year on their annual pilgrimage and it would be very likely that some of those attendees could quite unknowingly and innocently carry and spread this MERS-cov which has been found near Mecca, to the four corners of the globe. Should that happen the entire world would face an almost instant world wide pandemic of MERScov, which would completely overwhelm every countries essential utilities, power, water supply, communications, travel, and of course health, almost overnight. The planet might not ever recover from such an unprecidented event. Keep in mind that this MERS-coronavirus has a 50% mortality rate, meaning simply that in one event it could de-populate this planet by half of its total number of peoples. Nothing in all the history of this planet has ever come close to impacting on humanity to such an extent. Last Edited by arkay on 05/18/2013 02:27 AM |

At least the President of the Haj and Umrah Committee Osama Filaali, is demonstrating considerable decency and appropriate caution. Its a pitty that the Saudi Health Authorities seem incapable of heeding the obvious. "No contigency plans" are these people completely incapable of having any sense of responsibility towards the rest of the world, let alone their visitors well being? I would describe these comments and innactions as nothing less than reclessly dangerous to an extreme extent. Judge for yourselves, but keep in mind my comments from my last post. JEDDAH: ARAB NEWS Saturday 18 May 2013 Last Update 18 May 2013 12:28 am .President of the Haj and Umrah Committee Osama Filaali called on the Health Ministry to make Eastern Province pilgrims undergo coronavirus testing. He said up until yesterday the committee has not received of contingency plans to deal with a possible outbreak of the virus, which is associated with acute respiratory syndrome accompanied by renal failure. Jeddah Health Director Dr. Sami Badawood said the Health Ministry does not intend to make pilgrims arriving from the Eastern Province through the King Abdelazziz Airport to undergo such medical tests for Corona Break... He said the Health Ministry has issued a warning to citizens who appear to have symptoms of the disease, or those who have contact with people who have it, not to leave their area and undergo medical check-ups. “This is sufficient precautionary measures for this disease in the present situation,” he said.
