Yup...That is an inside job. Friend of mine last week, had a break in. He lost 10k cash, extra big nice flat screen and wife's jewelry.
All in a span of a few hrs, daylight time, when wife is normally home.
Just happened to be the housekeepers day off.

had two friends house get robbed for seriously expensive guitars, a latop, and a desktop mac. It was the landlord who owed money to creepy people, he had the keys naturally. He knew their school schedule, and they cleaned them out all nice and tidy. Hell awaits those fuckholes.

For 150 bucks, I got an alarm system of eBay that works very well. It has glass breakage sensors, alarms for all windows and doors, and half a dozen internal motion sensors. If it's set off, it blares 120db siren, and dials me and the local PD. Cheap insurance.

I know someone who was robbed recently. It was a brilliant set up. Their grill disappeared one night. A few days later, it's back, with a note: "sorry we took your grill, we were drunk and when we sobered up we realized we were wrong. Accept these two baseball game tickets as a token of our remorse"

So the victim took his wife to the baseball game, using the tickets the perps left. While at the game, the thiefs came back and TOTALLY cleaned the house out. It was all a ruse to get them out of the house for a few hours, at a known time.

Sorry, but your son has lost his job or his drug costs exceed his income. He is an addict, and you have rose colored glasses. When he was gone for two hours, it was to fence your stuff.
