Gitmo Closing?? Guantanamo Bay Prison Makeover to Cost US Taxpayers $170 Million

General John F. Kelly and the U.S. Southern Command have requested as much as $170,000,000 to spruce up and add new compound buildings, including a totally new prison building likely to replace the mysterious Camp 7, a mess hall and a new barracks, to the 11 year old Guantanamo Bay, Cuba prison facility. According to CorrectionalNews.com the funds will be provided “via a taxpayer bill.”

General Kelly said the existing structures, which weren’t intended to be used for such a long period of time, are inadequate and outdated. Speaking before the Armed Services
Committee, Kelly plead his case for the expenditure :

“Guantanamo was built to be a temporary facility 11 years ago, if we’d had any idea we were even going to be there even five years doing the operations down there that have changed significantly, as you know, over the years. If we’d have known we were going to be down there five years even we would have built a different facility. All these temporary buildings, for the most part, are falling apart. We really need to get serious about taking care of our troops that are down there as well as improving security.”
