Aspartame was originally designed as an ant killer. I don't know why it made made as an ant killer, except that it might have been toxic to the environment.

Anyway, for ant killing purposes, I've never been able to find aspartame for sale in bulk. Everything sold is in packets.

Hmmm...

I'll have to look again.

I'll send for some today!

Can't wait to see those suckers go crazy and die!
(I never had ants until some crazy neighbor brought in wood from trees that were cut down by their owners. He brought fungus and carpenter ants into the area that ruined grass and killed a few trees.)

Thank you, thank you! Have been battling fire ants a few years here near Lockhart, and nothing has worked. Terro brand worked the best, but haven't been able to find it lately.

I read somewhere that they were working on a substance that was sweeter than sugar , thus attracting the ants , who in turn ingest the poison or take it back to "the hill"

Thank you also. Maybe a drive to the HD is a good idea. Now for price comparison and experimenting on the different mounds in our yard.

Sweet'n'Low isn't aspartame; it's a saccharin product and comes in pink packets. Equal and NutraSweet are aspartame and come in yellow and blue packets--and you're right, aspartame is bad stuff. Which did you actually use?

Aspartame kills.

I have tried everything from store bought ant killer, boiling water, grits, borax and a glass. They just move and make another bed.

Stirred the ant beds up, then sprinkled with 8 - 10 packets of sweet n low. This morning they are gone. Will let you know if moved.

Last year, I killed a mouse with a little dish of aspartame.

Because fire ants make standing or mowing yards very painful. Pets have problems with them. Named fire ant for a reason.

Re: I killed ant beds with sweet n low
You can thank Donald Rumsfeld and Ronald Reagan.
They are the reason we humans consume aspartame.

Aspartame was ant poison.
Searle Corp was scrambling to find a solution to the 'saccharin' problem. That being, floods of studies linking saccharin with cancer.

Searle submitted aspartame to the FDA who soundly rejected it as a food additive, more than once.

Searle CEO Rumsfeld had a buddy in Reagan.
Reagan issued an Executive Order changing the way the FDA approves food additives.
Rumsfeld's Searle Corp resubmits its ant poison once again to the FDA.

This time the US-FDA approved it for human consumption..

I've been telling people this since the late 1980's.
Aspartame is poison. :(
 Quoting: wisc_natureboy

OK, perhaps not Executive Order, rather by appointment.
---

Independent analyses of these studies [by Searle, manufacturer of aspartame] ... proves conclusively that aspartame is actually a dangerous, neurotoxic, carcinogenic and highly-addictive drug. ... Rumsfeld was hired as Searle CEO on March 8, 1977 and immediately ... fired many of its high-level managers, replacing them with other politically-connected Washington, D.C., insiders. ... There was [however] no doubt, based upon objective analyses of evidence that had accumulated for over a decade, that aspartame was deathly poisonous to lab animals and caused a statistically significant number of them to develop tumors. ... Ronald Reagan was sworn in as president January 21, 1981. Rumsfeld, while still CEO at Searle, was part of Reagan's transition team. This team hand-picked Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes, Jr., to be the new FDA commissioner. ... Hayes, left his post at the FDA in November, 1983, amid accusations that he was accepting corporate gifts for political favors. Just before leaving office in scandal, Hayes approved the use of aspartame in beverages. ... Within weeks ... cans of diet sodas and other sweet drinks were on the market ... and [aspartame] is now in an estimated 7,000 to 9,000 commonly-consumed products in at least 100 countries. When Searle was absorbed by Monsanto in 1985, Rumsfeld reportedly received a $12 million bonus. ... Not surprisingly, the same adverse reactions seen in lab animals in the 60s and 70s are now being seen in the general population. ... Rumsfeld became the CEO of Searle to secure political approval for a product that science had proven to be a highly-addictive neurotoxic drug that causes chronic ill health, brain tumors and death.

Re: I killed ant beds with sweet n low
The most important way to stop ants is to keep wiping down the surfaces they use for their trail. Once they lose their trail they stop coming.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 14408911

You don't live in the south..or in the country do you? We have fire ant beds about every five feet down here. They love flower beds also. Having them in the house isn't so much the problem...but not being able to walk across your yard is.

Note: To stop them from coming in, put a little line of baby powder across the bottom of your doors. If they do get in, a little baby powder spread on their line will kill the ones you see, and stop new ones from getting in. Of course, baby powder is safe for pets...at least I think it is. Someone here will probably tell me how baby powder causes birth defects or somethong though....

Salty, I live in the south and the mounds are a problem. I've seen kids get in the mounds and the suffering was horrendous.

Wonder if I could put baby pwder all over my yard?

I like gasoline. Mix it 25/75 with water and spray it along the exterior walls of your house. Ants will stop coming in.

 Quoting: wisc_natureboy

True, I can accept that. that's your choice.
I'm just stating the results are inconclusive.

For every study that says it causes cancer there's one that says it doesn't.

Personally I have never known anyone to get cancer from artificial sweeteners of any kind.
I have known 4 people that died of cancer a varied ages and nether of them used diet products.

as for me...I've been drinking diet coke since 1992 and have had no problems ever.

vinegar kills ants too, and it's not a poison, even though I believe aspertame is a poison.

vinegar will kill your grass though, so only use it where there is no grass to kill.
Don't ever buy store weed killer, just use vinegar.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 38864142

Darnit, the sugar ants in my kitchen have become worse since this post this morning! lol
I sprayed some vinegar to clean the counter nearby and it seemed to get them more active. Their intolerance to the normal chems in traps makes this thread even better :)

I will next mix some borax with some of the fake sugar.
