and if it is a radiation detector (which i'm totally willing to concede that is may be) then that's TOTALLY something that one brings to a marathon viewing, right?

It's one of the military doing the "fake bomb exercise" who got real.

I have to agree. It looks like a radiation detector and is very clear in the picture.

Good eyes though, whoever found the pictures. They should keep it up.

Plenty of photos of at least 3 military guys with black backpacks and earplugs, etc etc.

Yup. Plus, responders are already on scene in the photo...no way he would still be holding the detonator, if it were one.

Notice the shoes. I've seen three guys with similar pants and tan 5.10 shoes/boots.

Obviously not a civilian, covert ops, see it all the time in the UK at large events, military parades and anything governmental/royal.

but then that begs the question....should he not be a little more....active? concerned? helping? AFTER the bombs went off?

The device is quite large, has a dot-matrix LCD screen and keypad.

To be honest it could be a wide variety of electronic items, better quality pictures are needed to aid identification.

People have specific roles in emergency situations, nothing out of the ordinary, hence why (most of) your Police officers did nothing to help the victims of the bomb blast, not their job or responsibility it seems.

I wonder if they knew of a threat and were monitoring the race to make sure it wasn't a chem/bio/nuke attack.

and he's wearing, essentially, the same thing the other "suspects" were seen in....dark jacket, black back-pack, khaki pants

These guys are military or something. They were pictured in the area of the bomb site before the actual blast. There are two of them.

this is not one of the ones in the photos circulating....there must, obviously now, have been several of them at the scene...
