Re: Meditation: Universally accepted as something Great: Doctors, Jesus, Ghandi, Buddha, AMA
How to meditate? Do I just sit down? I like the hand gesture of right palm under left palm and then the two thumbs connecting (the gesture of balance). ALso can you meditate while doing stuff? I find this is very hard to maintain the focus or concentrate. I saw this video "HOW TO STOP THINKING" on youtube and it helped a lot, it's a 50 minute tape and basically says you cannot learn how to stop thinking you do it by doing it. SO i guess meditation will help me with focus and concentration.

What IS meditation? Help me please

Liike when I go out in public and there a lot of people around me, cars, etc. and I stop thinking everything around me becomes inside of me and then I lose control(focus or concentrate) and the mind starts thinking and then uncomfortable/awkward things happen.
Can anyone help me

Basically I learn the universal truth, that is about perception and consciousness; the absolute. Now knowing it is all me I just feel like a bad person and I want to be good and everybody to be well and be happy and stuff and have un but it's like i am stuck in this situation and it's all up to me and it just seems really hard caus i am only 17- it makes me feel like i need to go and be alone for like a week or a weekend just meditate.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1342586

Meditation is when you try to quite the "thinking mind". That voice in your head is not you. That is called your "ego". That is not the basis of you. There is something much deeper to our being. When you quiet the mind you can feel this part of you.

Your oneness with "god/universalconsciuosness/holyspirit/jesus".

I think meditation is best served in a quiet setting. Where you wont be disturbed.

Being "mindful" is what you touched on I think. Being aware of your every action/thought. This is a fun thing to do, and it can help you realize mistake before you make them.

I know the feeling about being alone. I want to move to Tibet and be a monk for 20 years sometimes. I am not joking. This is exactly what I want to do.

We are hear for lessons. Enjoy the ride. Enjoy the emotions. Even the ones deemed as bad. Realise them and then move on.

I hate when people think meditation gives you magic powers (I'm not talking about the skeptics only but also the doers). I don't believe in "chi". I do believe that meditation strengthens the mind to do some amazing things. Even if meditation is a bunch of bullshit, it still relieves stress and strengthens cognitive thinking. The mind is a powerful thing.

Did you miss the whole post with about 100 bible verses about how meditation is good?

Preachers are indeed too busy to teach the bible.

Hmmmm, I'll pass. Turning my brain into some sort of interdimensional jelly so that evil entities can enter my thoughts is out of the question altogether.
1 John 1–3._ 1Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 3and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God.

I'm a firm believer in the power of meditation. And yes, it can bring material gains if you want it to.

You are correct however; it is not instantaneous.

Why do we love to hike in nature......go fishing....sit on a porch swing at night, listening to the crickets chirp....

Why does the sound of leaves rustling in the wind soothe us, the soft roar of the ocean....the songs of birds in the morning fill us with such cheer?

It is because the human being was created for meditation. We meditate by accident. There is a built-in fail-safe that forces us to meditate when we are doing mundane things.....if not, we would go insane.

To meditate is to seperate ourselves from the voice of our thoughts,(the serpent in the garden).

This is why nature is designed to woo the thoughts out of us...to strike us dumb with wonder and compel silence. Meditation is mankind's natural response to nature.

It's very simple. As I said in an earlier thread, you will think that you're not accomplishing anything while you're meditating, but you are. Just give it time.

Not too long ago, I watched Deepak Chopra on TV.

He talked about the importance of meditation. He said if you meditate for 21 days straight, it will change your life. Certainly, meditating after 21 days is important, but he says you will see a difference in your life after 21 days.

Much of what he said about meditating is what I learned years ago at a transcendental meditation class...and I KNOW it works! We were also advised to turn off a phone that might ring. I found out that's important. You don't realize it at the time, but you are so relaxed while meditating, that a sudden noise, such as a ringing phone, will startle you.

Deepak meditates for 2 hours every morning...from 4-6am (ARGH), but....this is his advice:

* 15-20 minutes is good for us in morning and ideally again, around 4 or 5 pm (before dinner) At least do it in morning! It will energize you. Will lower B/P, stress, etc.
* Don't eat or drink coffee...meditate on empty stomach
* Sitting position. Palms up, touch thumb to tip of index (pointer) finger
* Legs crossed or not crossed...just be comfortable
* Let thoughts flow...don't try to silence them. (I was told to think of a peaceful scene)
* Don't say mantra outloud...do it mentally
* Best mantra is "soooo humm" soooo when inhaling.....humm when exhaling (This is Deepak's advice. I never did the inhale-exhale thing)
* Your breath will get slower and deeper, but don't concentrate on it

He said you can meditate anywhere....even on an airplane, but never while driving.
Never meditate before bedtime....meditation will energize you.
 Quoting: nutmeg

So the hummm sooo was in sync with my breathing running on auto pilot, and as this was going on I was thinking as 'another part of me'. The intelligent One, as i call/understood it. There is only One. we are the imagination of ourselves, one consciousness experiencing It Self. A Singularity. I'm eager to maintain this focus. so I'm definitely gonna meditate.

thank you i wish you all well and will see ya.

Meditation is contemplation upon something - that beautiful ocean, the handiwork of God which shows Him as Creator, the birth of your child etc.

Mind alterating meditation is BLANKING the mind of all thought bar a repetively word or mantra. It is the MOST UNNATURAL STATE KNOWN TO MAN.

Really? Who said that?

What state to do you think babies enter the world into. They have no language so when they see light in the birthing room, They have no word for "lights".

Their mind is "blank".

Show me any study/link that says it is un-natural? I will wait here.

Yea, that is one of the hardest parts.

There is a "learning curve" to meditation. And its most profound effects usually take months to come about.

But even after your very first session you will "feel" better mentally.

People have realized the truth in many ways. Not just meditation. The "other ways" seem to be more anecdotal or tailored only to the individual.

But, meditation can definately get you there. So it is the "tool" I promote.
