Disclaimer: If you come to this thread to spew hate/fear I will just delete it. If you have something viable to debate against meditation please post something to back it up.

There is one thing that is universally accepted as something good and wonderful too do.

Something that will help you health.

Something that will help your wealth.

Something that will bring you peace.

Something that will unlock the secrets of "yourself"

Everyone from the AMA, Catholics, Buddhists, Christians, Ghandi, Jesus. Meditation is universally accepted as something we should all do.

So, why isnt everyone doing it?

I hate when people think meditation gives you magic powers (I'm not talking about the skeptics only but also the doers). I don't believe in "chi". I do believe that meditation strengthens the mind to do some amazing things. Even if meditation is a bunch of bullshit, it still relieves stress and strengthens cognitive thinking. The mind is a powerful thing.

I disagree. At least from my personal experience.

The worst part is, it doesnt happen with 1 meditation session.

That is the downfall of it. People want "instant" results. Meditation is a journey. The more you do it, the more you realize. The more power you have.
 Quoting: Forgotten

I learned how to do it years ago when they had classes for transcendental meditation at various places in cities. They said to do it only on an empty stomach...that is, when you first awake in the morning and/or before dinner. Never before you go to bed because it gives you energy.

When I first did it, I had a toddler, so it wasn't easy, but I tried to stick with it. When I did, life was easier. I was more organized, more relaxed, and I was happy.

It just took 15-20 minutes of my time, but over the years, I grew less disciplined, and eventually stopped doing it. Now, I awake and go get a cup of coffee.

I am retired, so I feel like I don't really need it as I once did. I live a stress-free life compared to many years ago. I do know that I would be better doing it....one of these days I will start again.

I would recommend meditating to EVERYONE....especially if you have stress or worries in your life! It really works.
 Quoting: nutmeg

Wonderful story. Thanks for sharing.
 Quoting: Forgotten

They told us that before you sit down to meditate, shut your phone off. I remember thinking back then....now what difference would that make? I didn't turn it off, and one time the land phone rang. It really startled me! It sound 10x louder than usual. From then on, I turned the phone off!

You really won't realize that you are relaxed while you're meditating. In fact, once you're done after the 20 minutes, you won't feel any different, but eventually, you'll see a difference in your life. I can't remember, but I think they say you'll see a change in 2 or 3 weeks.
 Quoting: nutmeg

Yea, I would say 2-3 weeks to start to see/feel changes. From there it depends on the person.

I agree about not realizing about relaxing. Sometimes you think you didnt relax at all. I find if I think back to the moments of meditation after I am done, I realize certain points during mediation when I had those moments of "oneness".

Which reminds me. The first few times I had these moments, I was so happy and elated it brought me almost immediately out of the meditative state.

I had a hard time breaking through to maintain those moments. You get so excited that you did it. Was hard for me anyways.

There is no possible way to gain material goods or an ego boost from meditation.

That's why most people will NEVER do it.
Quoting: Demon Cat in the Blue Basket

And those who meditate for a reason like gaining anything are missing the point.

Meditation is best done with no purpose since it's meant to silence the chatter in the mind.

Meditation is just like listening to a song you like or dancing, you're grooving to life.

Why would you even bring this to the thread?

It is irrelevant to our conversation.

Completely irrelevant. Even if true.

Re: Meditation: Universally accepted as something Great: Doctors, Jesus, Ghandi, Buddha, AMA
How to meditate? Do I just sit down? I like the hand gesture of right palm under left palm and then the two thumbs connecting (the gesture of balance). ALso can you meditate while doing stuff? I find this is very hard to maintain the focus or concentrate. I saw this video "HOW TO STOP THINKING" on youtube and it helped a lot, it's a 50 minute tape and basically says you cannot learn how to stop thinking you do it by doing it. SO i guess meditation will help me with focus and concentration.

What IS meditation? Help me please

Liike when I go out in public and there a lot of people around me, cars, etc. and I stop thinking everything around me becomes inside of me and then I lose control(focus or concentrate) and the mind starts thinking and then uncomfortable/awkward things happen.
Can anyone help me

Basically I learn the universal truth, that is about perception and consciousness; the absolute. Now knowing it is all me I just feel like a bad person and I want to be good and everybody to be well and be happy and stuff and have un but it's like i am stuck in this situation and it's all up to me and it just seems really hard caus i am only 17- it makes me feel like i need to go and be alone for like a week or a weekend just meditate.

If you want to learn how to meditate, google search "Jack Kornfield", one of his books or audiobooks on vipasanna will help you, he is the best meditation master IMO.

Maybe you SHOULD block out some sort of extended period to meditate. Find a place where you won't be disturbed... maybe a safe natural setting... let those around you who could be concerned by your absence know about it, and get your meditation on! You may only be 17, but IMHO, you can do a LOT for the world by spending that time at peace with yourself... and with the extension of yourself... the world.

It's very simple. As I said in an earlier thread, you will think that you're not accomplishing anything while you're meditating, but you are. Just give it time.

Not too long ago, I watched Deepak Chopra on TV.

He talked about the importance of meditation. He said if you meditate for 21 days straight, it will change your life. Certainly, meditating after 21 days is important, but he says you will see a difference in your life after 21 days.

Much of what he said about meditating is what I learned years ago at a transcendental meditation class...and I KNOW it works! We were also advised to turn off a phone that might ring. I found out that's important. You don't realize it at the time, but you are so relaxed while meditating, that a sudden noise, such as a ringing phone, will startle you.

Deepak meditates for 2 hours every morning...from 4-6am (ARGH), but....this is his advice:

* 15-20 minutes is good for us in morning and ideally again, around 4 or 5 pm (before dinner) At least do it in morning! It will energize you. Will lower B/P, stress, etc.
* Don't eat or drink coffee...meditate on empty stomach
* Sitting position. Palms up, touch thumb to tip of index (pointer) finger
* Legs crossed or not crossed...just be comfortable
* Let thoughts flow...don't try to silence them. (I was told to think of a peaceful scene)
* Don't say mantra outloud...do it mentally
* Best mantra is "soooo humm" soooo when inhaling.....humm when exhaling (This is Deepak's advice. I never did the inhale-exhale thing)
* Your breath will get slower and deeper, but don't concentrate on it

He said you can meditate anywhere....even on an airplane, but never while driving.
Never meditate before bedtime....meditation will energize you.
