Why did everyone worry about December 21st when the calendar actually "ends" March 31st???

The mayan cycle actually ends on March 31st 2013 (13 ahau), when the last tzolkin calendar to begin before the end of the long count completes its cycle. What will happen on 31st March?
Quoting: guitarman1986 what about daylight savings time and leap years i dont think the myans were using them.
