Sinkhole 101 - Mysteries revealed
Hello everyone. I wrote this little article for GLP to read, hoping to dispel any misconceptions.

Here is how they are formed.

The process to make a sinkhole is actually pretty simple, you need a particular set of geological factors in order for them to form. Time is also a factor, usually sinkholes take a long time to occur and this is due to the slow process of limestone and or carbonate rock "melting" or dissolved by non other than water.

The main ingredient is off course water, usually in the form of rain. A porous terrain such as top soil and below that, loose gravel and sand. The water finds its way through the top soil then sand and gravel and eventually it will infiltrate the limestone substrata. Over time as more and more water travels through these channels they will get wider to finally lead to large sub terrain caves to form.

Here comes the "fun" part. Once the water level lowers to a certain point, due to either natural causes or man made (pump water out) it will off course leave an empty space, this process causes the roof of the cavern to finally cave in thus forming the dreaded sinkholes.

Off course there are much faster ways for them to form and its always due to heavy rain and flooding but this process of erosion is more evident and obvious.

Here is a graphical process that shows how its done.

Sink5

Sink1

Sink7

There are much bigger sinkholes in the "wild" that have formed over millions of years.
Here is a pic of one of a set that formed in Venezuela.

Sink4

Here is the results of such natural events within human habitats.

Sink2

Sink3

Sinkholes can also form under the seabed and this is the result.
In this case, water rushes in to fill the hole and you get an incredibly blue contrast color due to the difference in depths.

Is it me or is that 5th pic down a perfect circle? That looks like a view right into the fucking hollow earth to me, that's an amazing picture. Naturally formed perfectly circular hole like that in the middle of a city that deep.. crazy. Hollow earth books often talk about the many rivers that run under major cities underground, maybe that's where the dirt goes.

Yes, lots of sinkholes are caused by man.
But the end results are always the same, cavitation due to the creation of unsupported caves because of drainage of fluids, usually water.

Why haven't any sinkholes developed in proximaty to oil fields? Pumping out vast quantities of oil surly leaves huge voids.

Just asking. Maybe they have but I haven't heard of them.

Good question and the answer is because oil wells are much deeper than water levels.
Also the type of rock stratas involved are different.

Why, in the case of the FL sinkhole, did the concrete slab fail? Even if there was a hole underneath, the conc. floor would have remained intact, wouldn't it?

Lol Briefy, he does have a valid point.
Only thing I can think of is that the concrete was not too thick and also due to the acidity of water which would cause even concrete to dissolve faster.

Concrete really isn't that strong when not reinforced with rebar or wire mesh, and over a big hole and not properly supported it will crumble like glass.

The house wasn't much, the construction was crap and the slab they poured is obviously thin, from the pics I saw and wasn't reinforced with anything.
