That looks like a view right into the fucking hollow earth to me, that's an amazing picture. Naturally formed perfectly circular hole like that in the middle of a city that deep.. crazy. Hollow earth books often talk about the many rivers that run under major cities underground, maybe that's where the dirt goes. |

The virtue of courage is a prerequisite for the practice of all other virtues, because otherwise one is virtuous only when virtue has no cost. There are times when something needs to be done, and yet we know that if we step up and do this needful thing, we will pay a heavy personal price. -C.S. Lewis |

But the end results are always the same, cavitation due to the creation of unsupported caves because of drainage of fluids, usually water. Space, the final frontier...or is it? Knowledge is power |

Pumping out vast quantities of oil surly leaves huge voids. Just asking. Maybe they have but I haven't heard of them. Good question and the answer is because oil wells are much deeper than water levels. Also the type of rock stratas involved are different. User ID: 381742 United States 03/04/2013 05:05 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Why, in the case of the FL sinkhole, did the concrete slab fail? Even if there was a hole underneath, the conc. floor would have remained intact, wouldn't it? Quoting: Gladio It probably did for a long time, and this guy was probably a heavy fella...by which I mean a fat ass. I never forgive and I never forget I am a licensed firearm holder. But actually, it would take more than a fat ass to make cured concrete collapse. |

Only thing I can think of is that the concrete was not too thick and also due to the acidity of water which would cause even concrete to dissolve faster. Space, the final frontier...or is it? Concrete really isn't that strong when not reinforced with rebar or wire mesh, and over a big hole and not properly supported it will crumble like glass. The house wasn't much, the construction was crap and the slab they poured is obviously thin, from the pics I saw and wasn't reinforced with anything.
