"Six Strikes" Anti-Piracy Scheme Starts Today, With Mystery Punishments

Today the controversial "six-strikes" anti-piracy system kicks off in the United States. Soon the first BitTorrent users will receive so-called copyright alerts from their Internet provider and after multiple warnings subscribers will be punished. But, what these punishments entail remains a bit of a mystery. None of the participating ISPs have officially announced how they will treat repeat infringers and the CCI doesn’t have this information either.

Today the MPAA and RIAA, helped by five major Internet providers in the United States, will start to warn BitTorrent pirates.

The parties launched the Center for Copyright Information (CCI) and agreed on a system through which copyright infringers are warned that their behavior is unacceptable. After five or six warnings ISPs may then take a variety of repressive measures.

The scheme was initially announced during the summer of 2011 and after a series of delays it goes live today.

“Over the course of the next several days our participating ISPs will begin rolling out the system,” CCI Executive Director Jill Lesser just announced.

“Practically speaking, this means our content partners will begin sending notices of alleged P2P copyright infringement to ISPs, and the ISPs will begin forwarding those notices in the form of Copyright Alerts to consumers,” she adds.

CISPA cyber bill resurrected in Congress

During President Obama's State of the Union speech on Tuesday night, the commander-in-chief touched on the subject of cybersecurity. Obama announced that he has signed an executive order to strengthen America's cyber infrastructure, and on Wednesday Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, along with other members of Congress resubmitted the Cyber Intelligence Sharing Protection Act, the bill known as CISPA that failed to reach the Senate during the last Capitol Hill session.

I know if you actually download a movie from a certain movie streaming site(no need for naming) Comcast will send you a warning message but if you just stream movies from said site nothing will happen.

Cablevision to Suspend Repeat Copyright Scofflaws, Comcast to Hijack Browsers

Comcast is to begin hijacking browsers of its internet subscribers who are detected of repeatedly infringing on public file-sharing networks while Cablevision Systems said it would suspend subscribers for 24 hours after their fifth offense.

The punishment comes as the nation’s biggest internet service providers this week began rolling out the so-called “Copyright Alert System,” which is backed by the President Barack Obama administration and was heavily pushed by the recording and movie studios.

The plan, more than four years in the making, includes participation by AT&T, Cablevision, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Verizon. Others could soon join.

Also I get all my tunes and videos from YouTube, the #1 source of pirated content on the internet.

They tried the same thing in NZ and Aussie, but they could not enforce it because it was against the Privacy Act to log you internet usage.
