Any homeschoolers in Michigan?
I've been thinking about homeschooling for some time now but I honestly have no idea where to start or how to go about it, I'm a little nervous at the idea of pulling my little one out and taking over his education.

I have read about it extensively online but I'm hoping one of you GLP'ers in the state of Michigan, that has experience with this, would be willing to point me in the right direction, give me some advice, let me know how it's worked out for you.
And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.

I am an evil giraffe, and I shall eat more leaves from this tree than perhaps I should, so that other giraffes may die.

Re: Any homeschoolers in Michigan?
I am not from Michigan, but I do homeschool and can give you some general advice.

The best place to start for the legal stuff is hslda.org
Look up your state and get an overview of the law. Then Google the actual statute and read and familiarize yourself with that. If Michigan is a state that has a lot of govt oversight on homeschooling, a membership to the HSLDA is a good idea. For your membership fees, you get full legal representation of the state ever gives you a hard time.

Curriculum is easy to purchase and can be either very cheap to very expensive, but studies show you don't have to spend s lot of money to get good results.

What grades will you be teaching?

Ask me anything you'd like. This is my third year homeschooling, and I got my son to go from being over two years behind in math when we started (5th grade) to being ready for pre-algebra next year (8th grade).

1st/2nd grade is what I'll be teaching. I know in some states the laws are very lax, I've read that Michigan is one of those states.

He's done well in school, he's been reading since he was 3, his math is excellent. My biggest issue has been his health since he started school and he gets in trouble for doing things he's picked up from other kids. I really don't like the idea of teachers and school officials having control over him and basically acting like he belongs to them.

My biggest concern about homeschooling is the amount of time needed to do it. I'm not working now, I probably won't go back for a while but eventually I will have to. I'm just wondering if I can swing it.

How many hours do you spend on the schooling daily?
And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Re: Any homeschoolers in Michigan?
For my middle schooler, I spend anywhere from 4-6 hours "doing school". But a lot of that time I'm just sitting by supervising to make sure he's working.

For a 1st /2nd grader, realistically, you're looking at 2-4 hours, depending on how quickly he works. Younger grades don't require as many hours as the public schools make them do.
It also is going to depend on what kind of curriculum you choose. Have you looked at anything yet? Are you looking for secular curriculum, or is Christian based OK ? I'll be honest, there's waaaaay more options if you go with Christian curriculum, but even though I am a Christian, I won't use that type of curriculum for science.

Secular preferably but I'm not opposed to a Christian curriculum if it feels like a good fit for him.

I haven't spent much time looking to be honest. I've posted on a couple of forums asking for advice and I came here, just wanting to get some input from others before I jump into it. Like I said, I'm a little nervous about it. It seems like a lot to take on and I'm concerned that I might fail him because I have a lot on my plate already.

Re: Any homeschoolers in Michigan?
It is a lot, but it is worth it to me. It really depends on your reasons for doing it, and how convicted you are that you want to do it. It's hard, I won't lie, but it isn't impossible. And unless you let your kid watch TV or play video games all day, you won't fail him.

Depending on your budget for curriculum, I might recommend Sonlight for history/language arts. I haven't used it yet myself, but probably next year. I've heard nothing but great things from all of my friends. It's literature based, so he will read a lot of books, and you will read certain books to him. It's expensive, but has good resale value.

If you're on a right budget, you can check amazon.com for used textbooks and buy the teacher's guide to go with it. You can often get both books for less than $20.

I also recommend getting a copy of Homeschooling for Dummies. It's a great book to help you figure out if you really want to take the plunge or not. I borrowed a copy from the local library when I was trying to figure everything out.

I am in Kalamazoo, and my daughter has been with Michigan Virtual Charter Academy for almost three years. She hated the bs at public school, I hated the crappy teachers. This is still quite a new virtual school, not perfect, but my daughter is doing so much better, and as she is quite self directed it has worked out great for her.

I keep reading all of the garbage about schools around the country forcing kids to do things as part of their curriculum that seem way off base to me. I think it was yesterday that I read about the Texas school where the girls were made to wear burqas. Homosexuality is being brought in, now we've got schools trying to let transgender kids switch bathrooms..sticking a boy in with girls for various reasons.

I guess the biggest reason I want to pull him out is because I want to be in control of what he learns, I want him taught the truth, I don't want him to be swept up in all of the filth that is allowed in schools these days. I can't complain much about the school he's in now, they're pretty good, I've never had a problem with them, I went there when I was younger, they're fairly conservative and stick to the basics. I just get a feeling that like other schools around the country they're going to be forced into changing things for the worse.

I will jot down everything you've listed and check it all out later. :) Thank you for taking the time to help me out. It gives me a better sense of what needs to be done to get him started.

That's the first book I bought years ago, when we first started talking about homeschooling our kids. Is it still in print? Because it was the best reference tool I ever read.

Teaching grade school isn't so bad. The teacher manuals have all the lesson plans laid out for you and you can use them or not. We ended up going through high school with the kids, only because our last move was to a very rural school district. They couldn't offer anything more than what we were doing at home.

Re: Any homeschoolers in Michigan?
Definitely do it! I've never met a homeschooled family that regrets making the decision to pull their child out of public school.

You only need 20-30 minutes per subject. Quite often, people spend more time on helping a child with public school homework than a full day of homeschool.

Learn about ALL the types of curriculum styles out there. Determine how your child learns best. And fit in electives that your child enjoys (sports, art, etc).

Spend a day at your local book store or library - they have tons of books on homeschooling and how to choose curriculum.

Check out local meet up groups. They often have socializing time, field trips and curriculum assistance.

But you can do it on your own. Your bond with your child will flourish. You'll see the way his little mind works, way more than you can see it now. And that alone is priceless.

The main reason why there isn't a lot of advice online, is vecause you don't really need it! It's an experiment at first. And as you see the strengths and weaknesses of your child, the curriculum and your learning strategies, you will learn how to tailor his education accordingly.

You will not have a perfect plan at first. Just accept that and jump in! You can always return your child back to public school. But you'll see that he will probably prefer homeschool.

Good luck

It's so much nicer now, for homeschooling families. We're in W. Texas and I just found about our school district using that curriculum. I'm glad my kids are grown. When we first moved here, the homeschooling assoc. was just getting started. Now, they have all kinds of things for the kids, sports, drama, music, class sharing, even prom and commencement. When my kids where young, they had a skating afternoon.

Debauchery: I wish you the best of luck! Those are all valid reasons to want to homeschool. Just read and research as much as you can so you can make the most informed decision possible.

I homeschool my (almost) teenager, I have a toddler, and I'm pregnant this year! It is a lot to deal with, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
