probably because it was so fast, few had time to get camera's and most would have been reacting in fear to the blast. Those who captured it happened to be lucky and have a camera ready to use.

Great pictures! Thanks for posting them.
I'm a bit confused though. Some in the media say this thing was the size of a car, some say it was 30 feet across and now this article says it was 50. I wonder if anyone knows for sure.

yw and thanks.......I guess they don't know for sure but can make an estimate only.

not true

there are plenty of both pics and vid from under

and 'meteorites' are meteor pieces found on the ground

there are some from under, but no one routinely has a camera pointed directly up at the sky, so dont expect one looking straight up at it as its coming down:

No, its called an airburst (explodes well above ground), and this phenomena was known about long before this meteor.

The meteor exploded about 16-20 miles up.

Exactly.....

As it raced through the sky, the 50-foot wide chunk of space rock compressed the air ahead of it, creating the enormous temperatures that meant it exploded in a fireball somewhere between 18 and 32 miles above the ground at around 9.20am local time on Friday.
Although some debris fell to earth, ‘whipping up a pillar of ice, water and steam’ and creating a 20-foot-wide crater, the damage in nearby towns was actually caused by shockwaves created by the meteor breaking the sound barrier and then exploding.

Workers in the city remained busy replacing acres of windows shattered by a powerful shockwave caused by the meteor's strike, which NASA said released 500 kilotons of energy, the power equivalent to more than 30 Hiroshima bombs.

Only a small piece hit the lake. The meteor was about 50 feet across and most of that was vaporized. The pice that hit the lake was probably the size of a basketball. It hasnt been found yet though. The bottom of the lake has a mud layer 3 feet deep, so it might not be found unless they do something more advanced than just swimming down there with scuba gear.

Re: The most breathtaking pictures yet of Russian meteorite:
Update on size of meteor and search for pieces...

Divers searching Chebarkul Lake in Russia’s Urals region have found several craters that may be the impact zones of fragments of the now-famous meteorite that exploded over the area on February 15.
On Thursday, a team from Ekaterinburg will join in the search by conducting a magnetic survey of the prospect locations; the initial results could be ready as early as that evening.
Some fragments of the meteorite were retrieved in the Chelyabinsk region, which endured the bulk of the spectacular cosmic event. The biggest meteorite chunk discovered was about 1 kilogram. It is hoped that the fragments inside the lake could be much bigger, weighing dozens of kilograms.
Both teams used the proven method of analyzing video footage of the meteorite’s descent through a little bit of trigonometry.
The Russian meteorite was determined to be an Apollo-class asteroid, one of an estimated 5,000 near-Earth bodies orbiting the Sun and occasionally crossing the Earth’s orbit. Most of these objects are spread out between the orbits of Venus and Jupiter.
