Now WHY was THIS penny used to calibrate the camera on the Curiosity ???
I just now found this image while checking out some Curiosity images from mars.

They used a 1909 penny.

Don't you find this a bit odd?

I find it odd enough to ask here.

wtf

Check it out here

It appears from the description that this coin IS now on Mars.

Each time a person stands for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he or she sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. And crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. Few are willing to embrace the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change. They used the 1909 penny, and positioned it on the unit in such a way that an alien race that has some semblance of familiarity with our planet, might think this was a very old device. Perhaps having something to do with research treaties with nearby alien races. The dot-gov wanted to give it a 'backdated' appearance.

I believe 1909 was the true year of "first contact."

Copper is used in batteries.

Copper is positive.
