Or you WILL end up with a brick for sure. Thanks ACs for the positives. I just thought more people should be aware that there ARE alternatives available to the canned stuff in the stores. Each time a person stands for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he or she sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. And crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. Few are willing to embrace the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change. With any old x86 hardware, you will have all the routing you will ever need. The WRT54G has limited hardware resources by todays standards, albeit a classic Linux box. Even with DD-WRT though, with enough concurrent connections, the box will crumble and the packet loss will drive you insane. PfSense also makes management of multiple subnets, much easier. - IndygoGh0st |

Quoting: Hitndahedfred I thought I would clue ya all in on a few things. Most "routers" are made by Cisco. A lot of "branding" goes on in this market and others as you all well know. The FIRST thing I do after getting a "new" router is replace the firmware. Out of the box firmware is ok for those who don't care or just want an easy network connection in their home or office. But for the rest of us who really know the workings of these devices usually re-flash the firmware with DD-WRT or Tomato or one of the other open source versions written for the many models of routers out there. Personally I use DD-WRT in my Linksys WRT54G,,, Now my home network is very different from the usual home network. I use very different IP settings and various subnets to further deepen my security at home. When I say this I mean I am using several routers, and "smart" switches to protect my machines from intrusion. DD-WRT here [link to www.dd-wrt.com] Tomato here [link to www.polarcloud.com] And a simple Google search using these terms,,, "router firmware update" Will set you on the path to heightened security and control of your home or small business network. I hope this helps a lot out in this dire time I use WRT's capability to bridge my wireless routers. |

How do I find out if I can do this with my TP-Link 841? The constitutions of most of our States and the United States assert, that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves, in all cases to which they think themselves competent, or they may act by representatives, freely and equally chosen; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed; that they are entitled to freedom of person, freedom of religion, freedom of property, and freedom of the press. -Thomas Jefferson in a letter to John Cartwright, June 5, 1824 |
