You can do anything you want after that, just tell yourself you'll become more relaxed and calm as you go on. People use so many different techniques to meditate that it's hard to know which style is "best" for you. Some people visualize scenes, count down from some large number, hum a single tone or repeat a single word. Google "binaural beats", check out some around delta, it will get you used to the feeling and you can return there on your own with some practice. Have fun, be patient, you're probably a natural. Consider the possibility that you order yourself into being from chaos... You do this, always, in all ways. This "ordering" has resulted in the possibilities you're experiencing, here, now. In each experience you've ever had, more and more of "this" reality is generated logically from your previous experience. Your observation of this unfolding of order and chaos is reality. |

Pause for 2 seconds. Repeat this as you breath into your stomach and not your shoulders. Notice the ringing noise in your ears and focus on equalizing its levels on both sides of your head. When a stray thought comes to your mind remember the counting and the ringing sound. |

This is where true divinity and an understanding of the nature of things can be achieved. How you get there is your choice. Google it for methods. Don't confuse the methods with the results. It is not a thinking or contemplating session. It is a freeing of the mind. Once you learn to do this, you can turn your mind off like a switch whenever it is necessary. |

Specifically, the instant where you are switching from in/positive to out/negative. Eyes closed and then simply just enjoy the show of lights & shapes in your inner vision. Quoting: ANHEDONIC :greenkarma: This is not meditation, it is a distraction in and of itself. Like the other poster said , if this is considered meditation, just do LSD. Lights and shapes are a physical illusion. It is interesting and entertaining, but not truly meditation. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 29804770 United States 01/19/2013 11:02 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A trick of meditation is too focus on one sense so intently that you block out all other senses. This is why one of the most used tips is to focus on your breathing. From here you can let go of the final focal point and float around in nothingness or calmness. When you get better, you really will not even need meditation to achieve calmness, you can just remember when you were calm and be calm. Why be calm, it reduces the amount of information the brain needs to process, which increases awareness and response times, not to mention emotional stability. I generally focus on an object, look for as much detail as possible, any blemish or scratch. This will reduce my other senses as I'm focus intently on vision. From here you can focus on your breathing and then nothingness. Why start with vision? Some people have trouble quieting their minds and focusing on vision helps quiet internal monologue more efficiently. |

Ask a question to the divine and wait, quietly. "Be still and know I am God" as the saying goes. Meditating is actually just concentrating on something, thus you are not absent of thought. |

I've struggled with this too, you try to achieve absence of thought, but it's virtually impossible. So it's more about reducing the number thoughts or processes the subconscious is running. I will add in a warning as well for anyone else. If you practice absence of thought, you really should practice focusing with an abundance of thought or "awareness" as well to maintain balance. Which is using and analyzing as many senses as possible at once. They do go hand in hand, as the calmer you are, the more information you can process. Similar to a computer running programs, the less programs running the more power the CPU will have. |

It is interesting and entertaining, but not truly meditation. - How is it a 'distration' if it allows me to quiet my mind? - Physical illusion? There is nothing 'physical' at all about what you sense in your inner vision so I'm puzzled by your comment. Ever heard of the 'violet flame/fire' one can experience during meditation? That's what I'm alluding to. Maybe you haven't. |

When you drive your car from home to work but have not remembered the mechanics of the trip but the thoughts you may have had. Martial artists learn forms so that they do repetitive active motion, thus entering no mind where the mind does not think, the body only acts.
