...in awe of many things User ID: 26943919 United States 01/01/2013 03:23 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Having lived on the island of Jamaica, I have eaten a few of these. The description of Miracle Fruit is amazing!! ============== My personal favorite appears to be in the same family as Jackfruit, called Breadfruit in Jamaica. A very ripe fruit is wrapped in foil and slow roasted in a fire-pit in the ground. Once roasted, the taste is a mildly sweet, starchy, tender delicacy, much like eating a fine bread. I long to eat more! Thanks for this thread!! -- TRUST THE PLAN -- .......WWG1WGA...... ____________________________ still in awe of many things |

...in awe of many things User ID: 26943919 United States 01/01/2013 04:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The durian is available in Asian markets. Quoting: goodmockingbird They smell horrible, but the taste is nothing like the smell. I've never seen them before, but I was just reading the wiki on them... The edible flesh emits a distinctive odour that is strong and penetrating even when the husk is intact. Some people regard the durian as pleasantly fragrant; others find the aroma overpowering and revolting. The smell evokes reactions from deep appreciation to intense disgust, and has been described variously as almonds, rotten onions, turpentine, and gym socks. The odour has led to the fruit's banishment from certain hotels and public transportation in southeast Asia... I think I'll skip that one. Thanks Obsidian for the post! This reminds me of my own reaction to papaya, which is called pawpaw in Jamaica. Although I have occasionally loved it fully, I have had some which I can only describe as similar to the evacuated stomach contents one gets while nauseous. Sorry, but it's true for me. Perhaps, at such times, the body immediately KNOWS, upon first taste, that you should not be eating a particular food at that time. Considering my last comment, I have spent a few minutes reading its wiki page. Amazingly, the following info found under 'herbal medicine' might be one reason why a body might find something repulsive at times...times when it could cause more harm than good: Meat tenderizing Both green papaya fruit and the tree's latex are rich in papain, a protease used for tenderizing meat and other proteins. Its ability to break down tough meat fibers was used for thousands of years by indigenous Americans. It is now included as a component in powdered meat tenderizers. Herbal medicine Papaya is marketed in tablet form to remedy digestive problems. Papain is also applied topically in countries where it grows for the treatment of cuts, rashes, stings and burns. Papain ointment is commonly made from fermented papaya flesh, and is applied as a gel-like paste. Harrison Ford was treated for a ruptured disc incurred during filming of IndianAJ Shit and the Temple of Doom by papain injections. Women in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and other countries have long used green papaya as an herbal medicine for contraception and abortion.Enslaved women in the West Indies were noted for consuming papaya to prevent pregnancies and thus preventing their children from being born into slavery. [link to en.wikipedia.org] ========== Our bodies seem to KNOW such things intrinsically. My dearest Jamaican friend once run into the bush to find a remedy for a small problem I had had for a number of years...a simple blood vessel 'ending' on the surface of my skin which occasionally opened and bled out. Coming back with a handful of grasses, she tore off a skinny length of old sheeting, rubbed the grasses between her palms to break down their fibers, placed the mass over my 'wound' and wrapped it with the sheet. I kept it on for one or two days. This minor problem, which had gone on for years, has never returned. She explained that the 'folk' medicine she knew was 'no-big-ting, mon' --that if the body needs something, it will be drawn to any 'remedy' it will come across in the bush or even the marketplace. She said we must 'listen' to both our cravings and our repulsions, because the body KNOWS. If we continually get troubled after eating a certain something, such as milk products, our body is pleading with us to avoid this food...why else would it be rejecting it, making us feel sick? ========== Okay, folk medicine musings are over.
